Channing
Hello, my name is Channing. My animal id is #16125. I am a male brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 15-Dec-2017.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Channing is at risk due to behavior, New Hope Only determination. Channing has shown fearful/defensive signs (biting with no warning) while in the care center. He should got to an adult only home that will be able to manage his care, no apparent medical conditions at this time.

How is this dog around strangers?: Channing seems to be a dominant dog. He loves attention and likes to talk
Date of intake:: 12/15/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Bite history:: Yes, at the care center Channing bit a staff member on the hand, breaking skin, and ripped his pants leg. The staff member had reached to pet him.
Date of assessment:: 12/24/2017
Summary:: Channing has at times been social with handlers, and at other times snapped at them, biting one staff member. As this behavior has no apparent trigger, he is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: 12/15: When introduced off leash to female dogs, Channing greets politely and engages in very brief bouts of bouncy play.
Summary (2):: 12/16: Channing greets a female dog politely and wanders the pen.
Date of initial:: 12/15/2017
Summary:: Channing allowed some handling but snapped when restrained.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Channing so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Channing has been social with select handlers, allowing touch and seeking attention. However, Channing displays distance increasing behaviors when uncomfortable including barking, growling and snapping.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Channing’s bite history, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Channing biting without any known trigger at the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Channing has bitten someone at the care center who attempted to pet him with no warning. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Channing to new and unfamiliar situations.
