Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY:None 7/15/17 Unaltered male, stray Previously lived with: Unknown SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/19/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, and open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Summary: During the handling assessment Champion displayed a medium energy. He was social towards the assessor, and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Champion displays a soft body, when greeting a group of calm male and female dogs. He mostly keeps to himself, while exploring the yard. When an intact male is introduced to the group, Champion offers him chin-overs, and persistent after handler interruptions. Champion was brought in as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Champion be placed in a home with a dog that matches his calm demeanor and is tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/15/17 Champion was very affectionate during intake. He was laying his head in the counselor’s lap and he enjoyed being pet. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/15/17 During the examination Champion, though timid he allowed all handling. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 07/21/17 16:49 Today, Champion was rope reactive- jumping, flailing, biting and thrashing with the rope while being removed from his kennel and taken out for a walk. 7/19/17 A staff member reported that while he was running around with Maximus in the play yard, he got over-aroused and began jumping on him and barking. The staff was unable to get him under control so a second staff member stepped in and roped him. Champion continued to lunge towards the first staff member so they left him in the yard and went to get a third staff to double rope him to bring him back to his kennel. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Champion so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. champion displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner- Due to all noted concerns displayed in the care center environment, the behavior department recommends Champion be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Champion to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Champion to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Champion presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_ Basic manners/Poor impulse control-?It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control him impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_ Social hyper-arousal-Champion has displayed low threshold for arousal, while outside playing in the yard, Champion became over-aroused (jumping, lunging.) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Tetris to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Champion was rope reactive- jumping, flailing, biting and thrashing with the rope while being removed from his kennel and taken out for a walk. At this time, we feel that Champion’s behavior has begun to deteriorate here at the Care Center and his rope reactivity is becoming increasingly concerning. It’s been reported he redirected at another employee, air snapping at her hands.
