03/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: An itty bitty girl with big ears, thoughtful eyes and a worried forehead looks up at me as I pass her kennel. So cute and so sweet looking I had to meet this munchkin. She’s gorgeous in her well groomed tan coat, her little figure petite and nicely taken care of. She’s nervous in this setting that isn’t home, but comes when I called her, takes a treat gently although is still a bit too nervous to really enjoy it. She explores, she sniffs, she wags her tail at a dog in an adjoining pen, but never quite loses that worried look on her face. Champagne lost everything when her person lost her home; clearly a cherished friend and companion once she’s looking for that again. Named after a happy and bubbly libation, we want Champagne to live up to her name, so let’s get her home! 03/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Champagne came into our center after a neighbor found her left behind in an evicted apartment. She was nervous upon entering SAFER assessment room, head and tail low, cautious and alert to all movement. Champagne required a significant amount of treats to warm up to assessor, body a bit tense, but eventually allowed positioning and handling. She held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, eyes soft. Champagne stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears back, mouth closed, tail down. She was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, assessor moved slowly, her body remained low. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Champagne showed minimal interest in Toy, with brief bouts of enthusiasm that diminished quickly. She approached the helper dog slowly, ears back, tail down. The Behavior Team feels Champagne would do best with an Experienced owner that does not have young children. She may initially benefit from a slow introduction with treats (she sits on command) and initially entering a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect in her new home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy 1. No interest. Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper dog head low, tail low, ears back.
03/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Champagne is continuously uncomfortable when interacting with dogs off leash. She will avoid greeting and will correct a persistent dog. She arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Champagne into a home with other dogs as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her surroundings before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Champagne is uncomfortable with greeting and moves away, continually avoiding interaction. 3/23 update: Champagne continues to be a bit fearful, and ignores the other dog. 3/24 update: Champagne, again, is uncomfortable and ignores the helper dog. She eventually offers a brief correction with repeated approach. 4/6 update: Champagne is tense and stands tall when approached. She attempts to distance herself from the other dog. 4/9 update: Champagne keeps a distance from the helper dog and will bark when he comes too near to her. She is anxious in the yard, barking and seeking exit.
