07/19/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: From Google, I learned that Castine is a beautiful and charming town in Eastern Maine, one of New England’s oldest. How funny to be so taken with a place I’d never known until that moment, and to adore it at first sight. Admittedly, I almost missed 4 year-old Castine in her kennel, quiet as a mouse and blending into the gray of the wall in her silver coat. But as soon she was leashed and set her feet down on the ground, I had the feeling we’d met before. We hadn’t, of course. But with her big grey/green eyes, like two pools greeting you on the hottest summer day, she gives you the feeling that you’ve known her for ages and given her every secret. Castine is a bit too thin with some patches worn away in her coat like velvet off of antlers. After our brisk walk, we retire to the yard where Castine has one thing on her mind: snacks. She gobbles up my savory treats, those grey/green eyes bulging, tail all a-wagging, and while she can be a little overzealous at times given her slight frame, she sits politely for them each time and grants me kisses directly after. Castine, with her sea green eyes, would be a perfect fit in her namesake, the seaside town, but really, she’d fit in anywhere. In a home, in a heart, anywhere there’s love to impart, and of course plenty of secrets to share. Castine is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC. A volunteer writes: I approach her cage and there is a tag hanging on it that says “Staff Favorite”. I ask this happy little girl if she would like to go for a walk with me and her tail wagging like crazy tells me YES!! We get outside and she is the sweetest mush ball I have ever met. She gently stands up on her hind legs to give me a kiss to tell me thank you. I get down to her level and she just cuddles up to me tail wagging mouth open with a giant smile. A whole group of camp children walk past me and all say “AWW HOW CUTE!” when she was standing on her hind legs dancing with me. I tell her she definitely earns the award as a “FAVORITE” in my book too. Her forever home will be lucky to adopt this sweetie pie.
07/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/11/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/12/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Castine displayed no concerning behaviors on her assessment and was social throughout. She jumped up a bit on the assessor in an attention seeking manner. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Castine engages in exuberant play with male and female dogs in the care center. Due to arriving as a stray, history around dogs is unknown. However, based on observation made in the care center, the behavior department feels that Castine may be most compatible with other dogs who are social or exuberantly playful. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Castine allowed handling upon intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/11/17 During her initial medical exam, Castine allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Castine so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Castine jumps up on people. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
