01/30/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/30/16 16:18 Basic Info: Casper A1007744 is a 2yr old neutered male white Maltese who was given to the owner at 2months old age from a neighbor and is being surrendered due to child conflict. Casper’s last vet visit was 5months ago where he was given vaccines. He currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Casper is friendly/outgoing with strangers. He’s lived with a 1yr old who he is more tolerant of than the 5yr old he’s spent time with. Casper will bark, growl and or snap at them or any child if he sees them from afar or if they get too close. There are times Casper will let the 1yr old be near him and other times he isn’t too fond of them. He’s scratched the 1yr old when they attempted to pick him up a few weeks ago but the scratch did not break skin/or bleed. Casper lived with a female Labrador Retriever/Great Dane mix and loves spending time with her and playing, he’s the more dominant one. He’s relaxed, playful, gentle & exuberant with them. Casper hasn’t bitten/scratched an animal. Behavior: Casper is territorial of his things or items he’s claimed as his & he doesn’t always use the wee wee pads. Casper will growl when the following is attempted: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved or when being moved off of furniture. He’ll snap during the following: being given a bath, having his nails trimmed or if disturbed while sleeping/resting (sometimes will bite during this time). Casper isn’t bothered by being brushed or being restrained/held. When someone unfamiliar comes over Casper will bark. For A New Family To Know: Casper is described as friendly, affectionate, playful (more so with dogs), confident, pushy, excitable & very independent with a very high activity. Casper loves looking out the window, his squeaky toys, playing with dogs & to be hugged. Casper’s mostly an indoor dog who’s walked 3x a day where he doesn’t pull on the leash and is taken off leash at the dog park where he’ll wander some to play but comes when called. He eats Pedigree dry & wet food 3x a day and gets Kirkland treats. Casper’s well behaved when left home alone. He sleeps in a crate or with the owner. Intake Behavior: Casper had a loose wiggly body & allowed all handling. He allowed to be scanned (+), collared & taken pictures of including positioning him during his photo session. Casper didn’t seem to mind being picked up/held & was placed into a kennel with ease.

01/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Casper came into our center as an owner surrender citing that Casper is not getting along with children in the home. It is reported Casper will bark, growl, and snap at children if he sees them, whether it is from a distance or they get too close. It is reported Casper lived with a very large dog (great dane mix) and they were very playful together. Owner reports Casper will growl if anyone touches his food, toys or treats. It is reported he will snap when given a bath, nails trimmed, disturbed while sleeping. He is reportedly crate trained and will sleep inside crate. During intake, Casper had loose wiggly body and allowed all handling. He was easily picked up and placed into his kennel. Casper was very social, hyper and playful during his initial medical exam. Casper was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER Assessment room. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, slight lip lick. Casper stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Caspser showed no interest in Toy. Casper approached the helper dog at a quick enthusiastic pace, whining, tail above spine level. Although during the SAFER assessment Casper allowed all handling, due to owner reports of various situations where Casper has been known to snap, the Behavior Team feels he would do best with a New Hope partner that can provide behavior modification should any of these behaviors manifest further in the home environment. It is not recommended that Casper live in a home with children. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, slight lip lick. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.
