MARCH 2016
SAFER
Casey came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported she lived with children ages 6 and 17 and also lived with a cat, gentle, playful, respectful. Owner reports she isn’t bothered if someone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. She is reportedly housebroken and well behaved when left alone in the home. She is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable. Upon intake, Casey jumped up on admissions counselor affectionately, rubbing against counselor’s leg. She allowed all handling. Casey was a bit uncomfortable with tactile portions of the SAFER assessment, hesitant to approach assessor for any up close positioning. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands for Look item, head low, body a bit tense. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, lip lick, ears back, mouth closed. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body low and alert, sat at assessor’s feet at end of game. Casey was not comfortable with Squeeze item, whale eye, but did not pull paw back. She showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports she loves playing with balls, squeaky and stuffed toys, bones, and Frisbees. Casey does not approach the helper dog, head low. The Behavior Team feels Casey would do well with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit initially with a slow approach/slow introduction as well as initially entering a calm, quiet, structured home so she can relax and know what to expect.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is tense; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans in and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, low and alert.
Squeeze 1/ 2: 3. Dog does not pull back paw, whale eye.
Toy 1. No interest.
Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog, head low, turns to side
GROUP BEHAVIOR
3/16/16
When off leash with other dogs, Casey is polite when greeting but appears to become stiff and unsure at times. she will offer a correction but does not escalate, she did not engage in any play and stayed by handlers side most of the time.
