06/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: As shelter dogs go, it always seems that the ones who’ve earned the right to love and trust the least are those that love and trust the most. Sweet Casanova is 3 years-old and only 41 lbs. Every bone in his body is visible down to the tip of his tail. I had to knot his charming handkerchief (meant for a pup half his size) 3 times around his neck to ensure that it would stay. No one would blame this gorgeous boy for being wary, withdrawn, or even aggressive. But Casanova is none of those things. True to his name, Casanova is a lover. If he’s not showering you with kisses, burying his head in your hands, or inciting infectious giggles by sniffing at your ear, then he is not happy. He walks beautifully on leash, takes treats gently (shocking given his condition), and is affectionate, sensitive, lovely, and sweet. This little Lothario has already stolen a number of hearts in just a matter of days, never to return them. Will yours be next? Casanova is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
6/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Casanova walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Casanova was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was not interested in toys. Casanova did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs Casanova greets politely but spends a majority of his time exploring the yard. He is tolerant of mounting.
06/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Casanova greets other dogs politely, and otherwise roams the pen while keeping to himself. He arrived as a stray, so in-home behavior with dogs is unknown. Based on observations made in our care, the behavior department feels that Casanvoa may be placed with a polite, social dog. 6/14: When off leash with other dogs Casanova greets politely but spends a majority of his time exploring the yard. He is tolerant of mounting. 6/15: Casanova greets politely, then wanders. He continues to tolerate mounting from a female dog. 6/16: Casanova greets and engages briefly in play. He is tolerant of mounting from dogs, and also attempts to mount. 6/17 update: Casanova roams the yard and keeps to himself. 6/19: Casanova mostly roams and keeps to himself.
