Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/19/19Look:2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is a bit fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Carter is sexually motivated, and attempt s to mount the other dogs. He is tense around other males, but mostly keeps to himself. He responds well to handler interruptions. According to his previous guardian, Carter has not spent any time around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Carter be placed in a home with resident female dogs that are well socialized and tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 9/16/17: Upon intake Carter was excitable, playful and friendly. He allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/17/17: During his medical examination, Carter had a wagging tail, allowed most handling but growled and barked when vaccines were giving. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Carter has become challenging to handle in the care center and has snapped numerous times in the care center when uncomfortable. When attempting to place back into his kennel, Carter snapped at handler who tried to pick him up then a second handler intervened who walked into his kennel with him; though once they were in the kennel, Carter snarled and snapped at handler’s knee.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Carter jumps up and licks people but throws his weight around not knowing his own size, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. _X_New Hope Only: Carter’s sensitivity towards handling is beyond what an average adopter can manage without additional training and behavior modification guidance as he has escalated to snapping towards handlers. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can work with Carter to modify these behaviors and who can provide Carter and his new adopter or foster with additional support. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Carter has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when startled. It is important to always go slow and give Carter the option to walk away from any social interaction. Carter should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Carter’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Carter may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Anxiety: Carter has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, panting and high movements) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake; the owner profile does not note anxiety so we cannot be certain whether this behavior will continue in a future home, or whether it is specific to the shelter environment.
