SAFE 11/06/17

Carrie

Hello, my name is Carrie. My animal id is #11301. I am a female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 31-Oct-2017.

Carrie is at risk due to medical condition. She is a geriatric dog with multiple masses. We recommend she go to an experienced adopter who will give her time to acclimate as she can become nervous with quick noises and movements.

A Little Bit About Me…

A volunteer writes: Carrie is ten year old…. She has been around, she still has a brain and she knows what she wants… A kennel is not to her like  and she voices it.  Food and treats… ..she loves and she will push, search, dig until she gets what she wants(she even hops on the bench to investigate my bag)… I like a gal with determination and  character… Carrie shows the wear and tear of advanced age and inadequate care but she is ready,  willing and able like the young lady she thinks she is… She is a good walker, does her business on the way, would not mind running after the pigeons and  jumps , yes, jumps for duck jerkies….She can sit on command too. Carrie has a lot of stamina. I love her looks, her expressive face, her will power and I so wonder what was her life like before to come to the care center.  I know she is not young but she looks like she could be a really nice companion who will appreciate all the nicenesses   you will have her discover under your loving care and give back… Come and meet Carrie at the Manhattan Care Center, take her home and show her how beautiful life as a pampered pet can be.
Another volunteer writes:   Who’s the cutest dumpling on the planet? C A R R I E, that’s who!  Who’s got personality plus?  C A R R I E, that’s who!  A chunky mama Carrie was literally bouncing in her kennel to get my attention to go out.   She loves going for an easy walk, seems to be housetrained, loved playing with toys, and the bottom line is, she has no idea how to act like the ‘senior’ she is.   Good for her!  I was told that our volunteer groomer gave her a bath and she was a good girl, and even rolled over for a belly rub.   Can you picture this chunky girl belly up?   Carrie has enjoyed her playgroups with both males and females, offering correction when mounted.  Atta girl!  A treat lover (she didn’t get that pleasantly plump figure for no reason), I’ll get a quick woof if I’m not fast enough, and her adorable jowls get all jangly.  After our playtime and then a short walk, Carrie lay down to rest as I chatted with a fellow volunteer. She’s an absolute delight who will be the best couch potato ever. After a walk and some play, that is.   Ask to meet her today.

My medical notes are…

Weight: 78.4 lbs

  • Behavior History
  • Behavior Assessment

Carrie had a relaxed body during the intake. She lay on the floor and awaited patiently for her medical exam. She was receptive to handling and allowed to be collar. She walked nicely on the leash and moved very calmly.

Basic Information:: Carrie is a brown and white large female dog. She was surrendered at MACC after being dropped off by her owner’s family friend. Allegedly Carrie’s owner passed away.

Previously lived with:: 1 Adult

How is this dog around strangers?: This information is not known because she was dropped off by a person who had very little knowledge of her.

Date of intake:: 10/31/2017

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray

Date of assessment:: 11/1/2017

Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, ears are back, tail is down, relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag:: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have a long lip or lip lick.

Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.

Flank squeeze 1:: Item not conducted

Summary:: Carrie approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body. She allowed all handling but became a bit nervous during tag, tucking her tail when touched. She quickly grabbed the toy when it was presented to her and was reluctant to relinquish it but did not become tense.

Summary (1):: 11/1: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Carrie is social and engages in bouncy, pushy play.

Summary (2):: 11/2: Carrie is soft and social when greeting male and female dogs.

Date of initial:: 10/31/2017

Summary:: Carrie was tense.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Carrie so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a low level of activity.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Carrie consistently displays highly social behavior with her human caretakers. She maintains a loose wiggly body throughout interactions and solicits attention from handlers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Potential challenges: : Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Carrie is a bit at times in the care center, seeming to be afraid of quick movements. We recommend allowing Carrie to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations.
