A volunteer writes: Cuteness overload ahead!!! All ear-to-ear smiles and mini hippo wiggles, Carnie has a look that’s impossible to resist, and watching him cavort with a toy or frantically smother a new friend in kisses is the best pick-me-up ever. He’ll need a refresher course in verbal commands, but waits quite patiently to be handed treats or toys, and he’s happy to share them too, if you’re quick enough to grab one before he does, that is! Carnie’s a responsive walker on leash, keeps a clean den and seems to be quite house trained, and when he sees other dogs outdoors, they’re treated to the same enthusiastic tail-wagging welcome as his human friends. Tiny but mighty and full of non-stop happy energy, Carnie may be petite but he doesn’t do anything by half. If fun and adventure are what your family’s looking for, our little grey hippo is ready to deliver!

KNOWN HISTORY: None Intact, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog jumps up repeatedly on Assessor, leash bites. Has trouble settling. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw. Grabs the leash and repeatedly jumps up. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: Minimal interest, dog is more interested in the hand. Summary: Carnie quickly became over aroused during tag and was unable to settle. He was leash biting and jumping up for the rest of the assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back off, which can quickly lead to a scuffle. PLAYGROUP: Carnie has displayed a high level of on-leash reactivity toward other dogs, while playful during off-leash interaction. He may lack appropriate social skills while interacting. Carnie’s style of play and interaction may at times be forward, as he may not always respond to warning signals or signs of discomfort from other dogs. Carnie would benefit from closely monitored, slow introductions with other social dogs, or those who are tolerant and offer appropriate correction to help Carnie strengthen his social skills. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 01/16/17 During his initial medical examination, Carnie was tense but allowed all handling.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5): (Due to Carnie’s quick escalation and low threshold for arousal, we are concerned that she may overwhelm very young children.) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)

Carnie’s style of play and interaction may at times be forward, as he may not always respond to warning signals or signs of discomfort from other dogs. Carnie would benefit from closely monitored, slow introductions with other social dogs, or those who are tolerant and offer appropriate correction to help Carnie strengthen his social skills. 1/17: When greeting a dog through the fence, Carnie stiffens, hard barks, and lunges. 1/20: Due to previously exhibited leash/barrier reactivity, Carnie is muzzled for his interaction. He greets a male dog nicely and takes correction when play is solicited; his muzzle is removed. He does bark once it is off and he is in a separate pen then once the gate is opened he rushes in barking (attempting to solicit play). He takes correction and then softens and continues to play. Carnie lack appropriate social skills as he will repeatedly bow and bark at the helper dog despite the other dog avoiding and not engaging in play with him. 1/21: Carnie greets much better today and does not exhibit any reactivity through the barrier. He is sexually motivated with a female, however, and will persistently chase after her attempting to mount. 1/22-24: Carnie continues to bow and bark at other dogs, also offering vocal chase to solicit play. He is persistant and has been observed to solicit from dogs who may not be comfortable.
