05/27/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/27/17 12:09 Upon intake, the dog did not allow all handling or being collard. She had a tensed body, whale eyes and was consistently growling. After being removed from the crate, her body was a bit more relaxed with a wagging tail however still gave whale eyes and open mouth.
06/04/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Carmen is brooding in her kennel but she has all the reasons to be blue. Her owner is ill. She is a good dog, though. Though on the heavy side, we went for a very long walk. We were both a little out of breath coming back. Carmen posed for pictures and put her best humorous smile on her face. Her eyes even seem like they were laughing. I love her…and I am not the only one. She did not want my best treats so…I went to the store, bought rotisserie chicken and Carmen gulped it down. Of course, we do not recommend human food for pets but of course, there are always special occasions. I trust that Carmen will open up further but what she really needs is a home sweet home as well as the love of a person, and she will be once again the happy mama I am sure she was. Another volunteer writes: Not sure she was ready for a walk, a little coaxing persuaded Carmen that some fresh air and a chance to go potty was a good idea. Carmen’s person is hospitalized, so she’s understandably confused and unsure. Once outside, though seriously overweight, she motors along nicely on leash. When we stop at a doorway, Carmen hops right up the two steps and sits down with me, her eyes twinkling and wearing a smile as if to say, ‘see, I knew we could do this!’. Not interested in either of my treats, she allows me to gently stroke her face as we sit like old friends watching the world go by. We hang out for a while and when it’s time to go back Carmen quickens her pace, and hops back into her kennel settling down on her plush quilt like a queen. A volunteer updates: I knew she could do it! I knew there was a lively spirit inside her. She showed me today that spunky side of her. She ran through the yard, rolled on her back for belly rubs and gave me her paw upon request. She was a bit out of breath but a little drink and a rest in the shade while chewing on a rawhide relaxed her quickly. I love this gal more and more.
05/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/27/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT 5/29/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Does not follow. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Carmen was tense, trembling, and appeared fearful during her assessment. She avoided the assessor but allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Carmen has appeared nervous during her stay in the care center. She has displayed fearful, avoidant behavior during interactions with dog in the care center. This may also be attributed to her overall fear and stress level in the shelter environment. The behavior department recommends that Carmen be allowed a period of decompression before immediate introduction to other dogs. Future introductions should be supervised, and conducted to polite dogs at a slow pace. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 5/27/17 Upon intake, Carmen was tense and growling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/27/17 During her initial medical exam, Carmen was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Carmen so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a low level of activity. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Carmen remains uncomfortable in her kennel and may growl when someone approaches. She is social with her handlers outside of the kennel, and would benefit from leaving the shelter as soon as possible as she is not an appropriate candidate for the adoptions room.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Carmen is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Carmen is a fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Carmen the option to walk away from any social interaction. Carmen should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Carmen’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Carmen would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. _X_Kennel Presence: While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Carmen may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
