A volunteer writes as told by Carmelo: Hi everyone! I’m Carmelo!! I can be a bit shy at first but it doesn’t take me long to know you’re a friend and then I’ll want to give you kisses if you’ll let me. Let me tell you a little about myself: 1) I’m well on my way to being housetrained, but I’m young and when I move in with you and it’s all new I may have an accident. (I may not, but it’s good to know these things in advance I think, I’m smart that way.) 2) I LOVE other dogs and am so happy when someone wants to run and sometimes play wrestle with me. 3) I LOVE being a lap dog, and when I’m all played out cuddling on someone’s lap is exactly where I want to be. 3) I pull a little bit on the leash but I just need more practice and guidance….that’s all. 4) I love treats and take them really gently. So, those are the highlights but there is so much more to discover about me and I just know you’ll love me. My ideal home is one with another dog or two as I really like them and love to play. A human snuggle partner is a major plus too. So come meet me and I know you’ll love me. Even the intake staff when they met me said I was “playful and friendly”. Cool, right! So, don’t forget, that’s C A R M E L O.
BEHAVIOR:
Carmelo pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash (easy to distract), and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. Carmelo played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction with a soft body language but was easy to distract him. He took the toy with a soft body language.
Carmelo appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced adopter. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction.
Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Or, dog licks hands while lips are long.
Tag: 2. Dog played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction with a soft body language but was easy to distract him
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Playgroup Notes:
Carmelo engages in running play with both males and females. He is mouthy and will jump on and over other dogs during play.
When off leash with other dogs, Carmelo mostly displays sexually motivated behavior and attempts to mount.
4/19 update:
Carmelo engages in running play with males and females. He jumps over the other dogs but responds well to correction from dogs that are not comfortable with this playstyle.
4/20 update:
Carmelo engages in play with males and females. he is toelrant of more pushy rude play styles.
