02/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Carmelo came into our center on 2/14/2016. It is reported Carmelo was around children ages 4, 5, and 7 and was playful and affectionate with them, though sometimes unintentionally too rough due to his size. It is reported he is not bothered if someone touches his Food, Toys, or Treats. He is said to be friendly and outgoing towards strangers. Owner reports Carmelo is housetrained. During intake, Carmelo was friendly and playful, accepting treats and allowing all handling, though a bit rope reactive and began to grab and chew the rope. Carmelo pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He pulled out of assessor’s hands on all three Look attempts. Carmelo displayed high energy and movement in between Sensitivity item attempts, grabbing the leash and not relinquishing. He began jumping up towards assessor’s hands in attempts to bite the leash further. Carmelo was distracted during Tag game, focused on the leash and unresponsive to each pass, play growling and tugging at leash. He required a reset and redirection by leaving the room before continuing on with assessment. Carmelo gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip and loose body. Carmelo approached the helper dog with his tail at spine level, lip lick, body not stiff. The Behavior Team feels Carmelo would do best in an Experienced home with no Children. He will benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners in regards to pulling and also grabbing/biting the leash when aroused. Carmelo may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on the Assessor and all other stimuli available. His body is soft, likely panting, likely to display high movement between attempts, grabs leash/difficult to redirect. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor, play growls while attempting tug with leash. Squeeze 1 / 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, lip lick
02/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Carmelo is tense upon entering the pen, and crouches away once sniffed. Although he has not lived with another dog, his owner reports “there have been no past issues of Carmelo biting another animal.” The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as allowing Carmelo time to acclimate to his surroundings before introducing him to any resident dogs.
