07/07/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/07/16 09:42 Carmela A1080245 is a female 3 yo spayed tan and white AMPT. Carmela was given to the owner as a gift and is being surrendered because the owner is not allowed to have pets in her apartment. Her last vet visit was in 2015 and currently has no health issues. Socialization Carmela is very very friendly around strangers and children. She was not introduced to cats or dogs. Carmela has not bitten anyone or any other animal. Behavior Carmela wasn’t bothered when having her food bowl touched or toys and treats taken away from her. She enjoyed getting a bath and being brushed. She didn’t go up on the furniture in the house. She is shy when strangers approach the owner. She isn’t bothered when disturbed while sleeping. For the new family to know Carmela was described as affectionate, sweet, playful and a cuddler with a medium activity level. She likes to play with balls and stuffed toys and knows how to play fetch. She is walked twice a day and is mostly house trained but has accidents in the house when left for more than 7 hours. She is well behaved when left in the house alone. She knows the commands sit and lay down. She pulls lightly on the leash when walked and prefers to go to the bathroom on grass. For exercise Carmela loves to go running and brisk walks. She ate Eukanuba dry food. She slept on a doggie bed on the floor in the bedroom. Behavior during intake Carmela was very shy when I apporached her. Her owner scanned her, collared and placed her onto the backdrop so I can photograph her on the backdrop. She wagged her little tail when spoken to softly and she was then transferred into a kennel.
07/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Shy, gorgeous, so sweet and so overwhelmed at this time, it took a little bit of time for Carmela to start smiling. A beautiful, petite little girl in what else, a caramel color coat, she’s housetrained, good on the leash, sits for a treat which she takes softly, and finally came into my lap for some kisses. Surrendered by her person we’re told that Carmela is friendly around new people and children, has never been introduced to other dogs or to cats, doesn’t guard her things, enjoys being brushed and getting a bath, and is shy when strangers approach her person. She likes to play with balls and toys, plays fetch, is housetrained when walked at least twice a day, is well behaved when left home alone, and loves to go for a run or a brisk walk. She’s such a sweet little girl, and after we became friends Carmela lay her head on my knee and prompted me with her paw to pet her. So sweet! As Carmela has never been socialized with other animals she’s been uncomfortable to date with meeting new dogs. She’s so lovely, so sweet, so loving, and so unaccustomed to anything but her own home and person, she’ll need time to open up, to become comfortable with all the new stimuli that is being thrown at her all at once. She’ll do it, she’s a star and she’s waiting to prove it to you….one little step at a time.

She will reportedly have accidents in the home if she is not walked after 7 hours, prefers to use the bathroom on grass, well behaved when left alone in the home. She is described as affectionate, sweet, playful, and a cuddler. During intake, Carmela was shy when approached by counselor, owner scanned and collared her. She was timid during her initial medical exam but warmed quickly and became affectionate. Carmella was uncomfortable on leash, nervous and hesitant to walk. She warmed up quickly in the SAFER assessment room, sociable and very affectionate with staff. Carmela allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, body soft. Carmela was playful and bouncy during Tag game, but became uncomfortable mid game and slowed down, she approached assessor at end of game. Carmela gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip, body neutral. Owner reports she likes to play with balls and stuffed toys, plays fetch. When off leash with other dogs Carmela is uncomfortable and defensive. She greets at the gate with her tail tucked, but wagging, but once in the pen she runs onto the bench and growls when approached. The Behavior Team feels Carmela would do best with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit from being the only resident dog, as well as a slow approach/slow introduction to her new adopters, preferably with treats. Once comfortable, Carmela is very friendly and very sociable and tolerant of all handling. She may also benefit from obedience classes to learn better leash manners. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. 07/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Carmela has not yet been comfortable when approached by other dogs, and has mostly displayed defensive behaviors in attempt to increase distance. Her previous owner cites that she had not been introduced to dogs in the past. The behavior department feels that Carmela should be given time to become comfortable in a new environment before following up on her behavior around dogs outside the shelter. Carmela should be allowed to interact and become comfortable around dogs at her own pace. 7/8: When off leash with other dogs Carmela is uncomfortable and defensive. She greets at the gate with her tail tucked, but wagging, but once in the pen she runs onto the bench and growls when approached. 7/9 update: Carmela is still uncomfortable interacting. She comes into the pen and immediately sits on the bench. She does allow greeting however, but will turn her head away. 7/12 & 13th: Carmela offers defensive correction when approached. 7/15 update: Carmela ignores greeting from males and females and keeps to herself in one spot of the yard. 7/16 update: Carmela does not approach the other dogs but will stay next to the handler seeking attention. 7/20: Carmela solicits a bit, however does begin to air snap and run away when the helper dogs reciprocates with play.
