A volunteer writes: A tiny peanut waiting quietly in her kennel, Carly is waiting for her walk and some snuggle time. It’s raining so we put our rain gear on, Carly looking dashing in her yellow raincoat. Showing off her housetraining skills the moment we’re out the door, Carly then shows off lovely leash manners as we walk in the rain. Carly has been a mom many times, and she’ ready to be loved for who she is, not for what she can produce. She’s a snuggle girl who’s happiest cuddled with her person, purring as she’s pet and lies under my chin for optimum closeness. Showing off her sit she takes treats gently, and we sit together watching the rain. Back in the building she makes new friends happily, her tail wagging with the fun of meeting people. In her first group she greets the helper dog nicely and offers appropriate correction if needed. Our little rock star wowed the behavior team who feels she can go into any appropriate home. Carly needs a bit of TLC for her coat as she’s been giving all her nutrients to her puppies, and it’s now her turn to be a pampered pet. I promised Carly she’d find her happily ever after quickly….won’t you help me make my promise to her come true? She’s awesome, you’ll love her.
BEHAVIOR :
Carly came to us as a stray, so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed in the shelter environment. Carly walked well on the leash and was very interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. During the tag interaction Carly had very soft body language when following the assessor at the end of the leash. We believe that Carly can go to a home with a beginner adopter.
Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft and squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft and wiggly.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then walks away.
When off leash with other dogs, Carly greets and offers a quick sniff to the male greeter. She offers correction for mounting.
