A volunteer writes:

Where’s the best to place to be on a scorching, summer’s day? No, not huddled against your A/C. Snuggled up to cutie Carla! Carla may be only 7 months old but she’s as calm and cool as a cucumber (“cool” being the operative word). Surrendered to our care through no fault of her own, Carla previously lived well with a 6 month-old child and two other pups. I can so easily picture this caramel-colored girl sweetly playing with her human sibling, more like her twin at the very same age. There is a sweetness to her that’s nearly indescribable, except when thinking of Carla I have no shortage of words: Lovely, beautiful, innocent, affectionate, wiggly, playful, curious, polite, elegant, gentle, bright, and special. Carla is the perfect companion for a long afternoon walk, sticking close by my side never rushing us for a moment. Even when we’re unexpectedly caught in a torrential, August downpour, Carla is the more level-headed between us, guiding me to the shelter of a nearby doorway. What better excuse to enjoy more Carla cuddles, and I hug her close to me as we watch fat, raindrops smack against the street. She “showers” me with kisses, and though my clothes, shoes, and hair are soaked through and through there is nowhere on earth I would rather be. Cute, cuddly, and caramel-colored Carla truly has it all. Well almost. There’s one thing that would make this young girl’s life complete – the love of a forever family. Carla is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.

BEHAVIOR:

Carla pulls a bit on the leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling and easily engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open.  Carla took the toy away but had soft body language.

Carla was surrender to us. According to her previous owner around strangers Carla is friendly and outgoing. She’s lived with a 6 month old child and was gentle, exuberant & playful with them & with the adults in the home. She lived at home with 2 other dogs and played well with both of them. Carla doesn’t mind when someone takes his food, treat or toys. Carla did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.

Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game.

Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

Group: 8/11: When off leash with other dogs, Carla engages in exuberant play, running, wrestling, mouthing.  The behavior team feels that Carla may be placed into a home with another social, playful dog.  She lived with dogs in her previous owner with whom her owner cites that she was playful.

If you are local to the Tri-State, New England, and the general Northeast United States area, and you are SERIOUS about adopting or fostering one of the animals at NYC ACC, please read our MUST READ section for instructions, or email helpdogs@urgentpodr.org. Our experienced volunteers will do their best to guide you through the process.

* We highly discourage everyone from trusting strangers that send them Facebook messages, offering help, for it has ended in truly tragic events.*
