A volunteer writes: People that say animals don’t have feelings don’t know animals very well. Cara is in our care due to her former owner’s landlord’s ‘no pets policy’, and she is feeling the strangeness of it all quite keenly. Her behavior at intake: “Cara had a very wiggly body, she rolled on her belly for me to pet her. She liked getting scratched behind her ears and gently greeted everyone she saw.” Of course, she didn’t know she was staying and her person leaving. The Cara I met is shy, unsure, a bit timid, and while it’s clear she wants to be friends, isn’t quite sure of anything any more. She’s a beautiful girl, well groomed, the perfect weight for her size (compact and sleek), and her ears feel like the finest velvet. We’re told she’s housetrained (check), is “playful and friendly”, is well behaved when home alone, likes being brushed and held, is relaxed with other dogs, has been with kids ages 2,8,9 and is relaxed and playful with them, knows ‘sit’, ‘come’ and ‘down, and sleeps in her crate at night. Cara explored our pen, very briefly played with a toy, and came up on the bench to sit with me for a moment several times. It’s clear she wants to be friends, but needs to learn to trust again. She aced her behavior assessment, but her former owner tells us that she will growl if someone comes near her food or treats, so it’s best she go into an experienced home without young children. Cara is hoping to find love and security again; she’ll make an amazing best friend and is hoping her soul mate is just around the corner. Is it you?

Cara isn’t bothered by the following: having her food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being held/restrained or with being given a bath. She hasn’t been disturbed while sleeping/resting nor had her nails trimmed. When someone unfamiliar approaches the home Cara will bark and jump on them for attention.

JANUARY 2016
A volunteer updates: Cara is like the shy girl at school whom you finally get to know and think, OMG, she’s fabulous! That’s our Cara! Adopted from us a while ago and returned as her person can no longer afford the cost of a pet, we’re told that Cara is housetrained, has been around a young child and is relaxed and playful, likes to play with her toys and run around and is friendly to all. Cara showed off her housetraining skills the moment we were out the door, showed off her sit for a treat which she takes softly, and then solicited my attention with a play bow. So cute! After we played Cara joined me on bench for some kisses and snuggle time, and her petite size makes her the perfect cuddle partner. I took Cara into the behavior assessment room where she proceeded to investigate the desk, snuggle with staff, roll over for a belly rub and play bow. This shy little
girl blossoms in no time and is fun, playful and loving. Let her former owner’s loss be your gain and come meet our little girl today. I guarantee you’ll want to make her yours!
