03/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Cane is a stunning young man, all white with a nosy brown spot on his tail and mesmerizing greenish eyes. He owns a huge smile and the way he looks at me from his kennel promises a great time together. Cane is a little shy at first but feels much better by the end of our encounter. His tail wags a lot. He is happy to be out and in company. He loves treats and can jump very high for them. Gentle scolding reminds him of good manners, and he obliges and sits on command. Cane pulls on the leash like so many dogs who feel out of place. He seems housetrained and is not a marker. He did not get into an argument when another male barked aggressively at him but has been uncomfortable with some of his peers in the one playgroup session he was in. So, we have to see a little bit more of Cane with his own kind. People, he loves. There is not a doubt in my mind. He is very welcoming, and after an initial timid behavior, he ends up on my lap for a big bonding session full of kisses and hugs. Cane is a really gorgeous dog, medium sized, sociable, affectionate and friendly. A meeting with a potential housemate if there is one will most likely be needed if Cane is to join your family. Cane is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center to start his new life with you.
03/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cane pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail but he became stiff and did a lot of jumping up, body checking, grabbing at the leash and was difficult to distract him while playing tag. Cane showed some concerning behavior during toy tests – freeze but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter no children who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 4. Dog freezes
03/09/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Cane is tense when greeted. He makes brief attempts to mount. Cane becomes reactive and vocal in response to passing sights and sounds in the yard. He arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends not placing Cane into a home with other dogs until his behaviors can be followed up on.
