09/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/12/17 Unaltered Female, Stray Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment Look:1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1& 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Candy was friendly and playful towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Candy Apple approaches the gate with a stiff, slow gait. She begins to growl, lunge and snap at the male helper through the fence. Due to this behavior, we placed a muzzle on her and allowed her to meet face to face. Candy Apple remained stiff and uncomfortable with hard eyes. Once she was close to the other dog, she growled and lunged onto his flank. A second attempt was made with a female helper dog. She was muzzled before and again greeted with a stiff posture and a hard stare. As she is moved away, she begins to growl and lunge toward the other dog. Candy Apple was brought in as a stray so her behavior around other dogs are unknown. Due to the concerning behaviors that Candy Apple has shown during playgroup, we feel that Candy Apple should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 9/12/17: Upon intake Candy Apple was very friendly and playful. She allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/12/17: During her medical examination, Candy Apple was very sweet and allowed all handling.

ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Candy Apple so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: (overall determination) _X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Candy Apple has shown during playgroup (see GROUPBEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Candy Apple should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized in a more controlled setting until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Although there were no issues handling Candy Apple, due to her behavior towards other dogs seen in the care center (see GROUPBEHAVIOR NOTES), we are recommending placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavioral support and perform an assessment of her behavior around other dogs in a more controlled environment before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only countercondintiong/desensitization using force-free, reward-based training for Candy Apple as more aversive methods increase fear and increase the risk of future aggression.
