Candy and another small dog recently ran through an open door and attacked their housemate. Candy grabbed the other dog on the side of her face and did not release. The attacked dog lost an eye during the fight. Candy is reported to have bitten this housemate previously as well. The human bite involved one of the owners pushing Candy off the bed with her leg, and Candy biting the leg (but not breaking skin). Housetrained: Mostly, but with occasional accidents Energy level/descriptors: Candy is described as friendly, playful, excitable, and talkative, with a medium activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: Summary: A handling assessment was not completed for Candy. Please review her behavior in the care center in other contexts, as well as her owner profile, for behavior information. PLAYGROUP: Pending INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 7/3/17: At intake, Candy was receptive to handling and allowed collaring, scanning, and picking up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/3/17: During her veterinary exam, Candy was social and allowed handling. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 7/5/17: Upon approach Candy is laying down, but comes to the front when the kennel opens with loose body. Easily leashed and picked up to be removed from the kennel. Outside she seeks handler attention and takes treats nicely. Easily returned to her kennel. 7/6: Easy in/out. Candy explored the pen, sniffing everywhere and did not seek handler attention. 7/10-7/11: Easy in/out. Seeks handler attention throughout time outside.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_No cats: Due to Candy’s behavior toward other small dogs, out of an abundance of caution we recommend a home without cats or other small pets. _X_Single-pet home: Due to Candy’s behavior toward other dogs, we recommend that Candy be the only pet in the home. _X_Recommend no dog parks _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Candy’s most recent bite was significant and she will need a behavior modification program in order to ensure she can safely interact with other animals in the future. We recommend only force-free, positive reinforcement, treat-based training for Candy. We also recommend that Candy be kept separated from other animals and that safety tools be used to keep Candy and the dogs around her safe. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Candy is reported to have accidents in the house. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Resource guarding: Candy has shown food bowl guarding behavior in the care center. When her bowl was removed from her cage, Candy was tense, so pole was used to reach the bowl. Candy lunged forward and bit the pole. _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Candy has bitten multiple times, both dogs and a human. This behavior will need to be addressed in order to help Candy become a successful family pet.
