10/30/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/30/16 18:53 Basic Information: Candy is an American pit bull terrier who was surrendered due to her previous owner having a new baby and moving to a place where animals are not allowed. Socialization: Around strangers Candy is friendly, and plays somewhat rough with adults and children. Candy has lived/spent time with children from infants and up around them she will be very playful. Candy will tend to growl and whine when the infant she lived with was being picked up and cared for. Candy has spent time various other dogs and is usually friendly and playful with them. Around other dogs of her breed she will often growl at bark at them. Candy will chase cats whenever she sees them. Behavior: Candy has never bitten another person or animal and is not bothered buy loud sounds such as thunder storms or fireworks. Candy is friendly when people touch her food or bowl while she is eating, takes a treat/toy away, pushes/pulls her off of the furniture, holds/restrains her, disturbs her while she is resting/sleeping, brushes her coat, and trims her nails. Candy is afraid when she is being given a bath. If an unfamiliar person approaches her family or home she will be friendly toward them. For a new Family to Know: Candy is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and excitable with a very high activity level. When at home Candy will follow around her owner and likes to play with stuffed toys, balls and squeaky toys. Candy was kept indoors only and was fed dry food twice a day. Candy knows the commands sit, down and give paw. Candy likes brisk walks on a leash and pulls very hard when on a leash. Candy will run away when off leash. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Candy displayed no behavioral concerns on her assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: According to Candy’s previous owner, Candy has spent time various dogs and is usually friendly and playful with them. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Candy is nervous as she greets a novel male dog with a tucked tail and low body. She initially avoids the male dog and explores the pen. She eventually exchanges sniffs with him but displays look-aways while air snapping when he greets her face to face. She chooses to walk away from the male dog. Due to Candy’s discomfort around other dogs, we recommend that she be the only dog in the home or she is adopted into a home with no more than one other calm, well-socialized dog. A proper dog-dog introduction should be done before an adoption is approved. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/31/16 During her initial medical exam Candy tolerated all handling without issue.
IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 11/7: Today during playgroup Candy was sitting on the bench with a handler that she is familiar with while a group of familiar calm male and female dogs were in the yard. When another female dog approached the handler on the bench and placed her head in the handler’s lap, Candy (still sitting on the bench) snarled, snapped and jumped down off the bench towards the other female dog. No further escalation of conflict ensued but the dogs were separated. It is difficult to identify the reasoning for Candy’s behavior; however it could be a result of stressors/triggers being stacked and her being pushed over her threshold here in the Care Center. Candy is slightly uncomfortable around dogs but has displayed some social behavior and has shown an ability to manage her slight discomfort around them appropriately. There also is the possibility that she may have been displaying resource guarding of either the bench or the handler. In any case, due to Candy’s sensitivity around other dogs and the possibility that she may display some form of resource guarding in a new home environment, the Behavior Department feels that she is suitable for an experienced adopter who is able to manage Candy’s potential behavior concerns. ENERGY LEVEL: Medium level of energy RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter _X_Single-pet home _X_Recommend no dog parks Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression _X_Resource guarding
11/01/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Candy’s previous owner, Candy has spent time various dogs and is usually friendly and playful with them. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Candy was initially nervous and avoids the greeter dog. With further playgroup sessions, Candy solicits gentle play with male and female dogs and displays bouncy body language. In a group of high energy players, Candy becomes overwhelmed. Due to Candy’s discomfort around other dogs, we recommend that she be the only dog in the home or she is adopted into a home with no more than one other calm, well-socialized dog. A proper dog-dog introduction should be done before an adoption is approved. 11/1: Candy is nervous as she greets a novel male dog with a tucked tail and low body. She initially avoids the male dog and explores the pen. She eventually exchanges sniffs with him but displays look aways while air snapping when he greets her face to face. She chooses to walk away from the male dog. 11/5: In a group of calm female dogs, Candy enjoys climbing on the play structure and running around by herself. She solicits gentle play but continues to run around by herself when play is not reciprocated. She displays loose and wiggly body language throughout the session. 11/6- 11/7: Candy briefly engages in bouncy running play with a group of male and female dogs but quickly becomes overwhelmed by their high energy and retreats to the bench or seeks the handler’s attention.
