03/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Candy came to us as a stray so we do not have any behavioral information other than what has been observed while in the shelter. Candy be seen at the back of the kennel with very fearful and anxious body language. When attempting to take her out she rushes to the front of the kennel and tries to push pass the handler. She constantly dodges the slip lead, and growls as well as lip curls out of fright. Once out of the kennel Candy pulls hard on the leash but calms down a great deal. She allows soft petting seems to struggle to find an exit due to her level of discomfort in this environment. As the assessor attempted to put a collar on Candy she head flipped multiple times with stiff and fearful body language. A decision was made to conduct the SAFER in the slip lead as not to increase Candy’s stress levels. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. However, Candy did have stiff and fearful body language throughout the assessment. Due to Candy’s level of discomfort here and the inability to collar her we recommend placement with a rescue at this time. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, stress panting, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog’s tail is tucked and body low. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog quickly pulls back her paw, body stiff. Flank squeeze 3. Dog is stress panting and becomes stiff Flank squeeze 3. Dog is stress panting and becomes stiff Toy: 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Turns body to side in relation to other dog, or exits.
