A volunteer writes: Gorgeous hunk alert!!! A perfect blend of gray and white, Calvin’s coat gleams with apparent good care, his tail wags in friendship and his weight is perfect for his size. Several staff members are in love with him telling me how friendly and nice he is and so he is. Staff, Calvin and I head into the back yard where Calvin proceeds to give each of us kisses, happy to get some petting, and posing for photos like a rock star. He smiles, he wags his tail, he’s goofy, playful and fun. Calvin loves playing with a plush toy bringing it to me to share as we play a bit of tug, and then jumping up on the bench to give it a good chomp. He lies froggy style, relaxing and enjoying the warm sun after a day of rain. Chasing a ball, or letting me take the toy from his mouth, Calvin is easy to be with, fun and friendly. His bright, smiling eyes are a promise of love. Calvin has exhibited some behaviors on walks with staff which need to be addressed. It’s reported that he lunges towards people, and any moving object – a skateboard, a kid on roller blades….and as he’s a big strong dog it is behavior that must be modified. In Calvin’s only playgroup interaction he was polite, playful and greeted the helper with a loose wiggly body. A pre- adoption interaction is recommended to ensure that Calvin does well with other dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Calvin, the snuggles, the playing, the photo taking and his sheer joy at being out and having some fun.
03/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Update: 3/31/16 Since Calvin’s SAFER he has started displaying some pretty concerning behavior while out on walks outside of the shelter. It was reported by multiple staff members that Calvin will begin to growl if strangers come within a few feet of Calvin. If strangers did come closer to Calvin’s proximity he will begin to hard bark, lunge, and growl and at one point air snapped. Due to this behavior the behavior department believes that Calvin should be placed with a rescue that can provide the behavior modification necessary before placement into a home. SAFER: 3/31/16 Calvin pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Calvin easily engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open. He was easy to handle when chewing on toys. Calvin did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
03/31/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Calvin greets with a loose wiggly body, and engages in rough play. He arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Although Calvin was polite and playful, due to only having one interaction the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing him into a home with other dogs.
