A volunteer writes: My first walk of my shift set me up perfectly for a good day. What a nice dog!! Handsome, friendly, affectionate and a joy to be with, Mr. Calla dons his Jets coat without issue and out we go. He did ask me to tell you that at the moment he’s a Jets fan, but if another team is your favorite – well, he’ll go with the flow. Calla pulls on the leash at first until he finds that perfect spot to go potty and then walks like a gentleman. He’ll sometimes do a little jumping up on the leash to play as he’s happy to be out. Calla is a bit too thin in my opinion so is hungry for treats, posing perfectly for photos as I hold a treat in my hand. Calla ignores squirrels, birds and some small dogs we passed in the park, happy to simply be with his person on this cold day. Flashing that fabulous smile that pitties are known for I see his friendly, welcoming personality come to life. In group play Calla romps with males and females and may need to hone his social skills a bit. Off leash playing with toys is fun, coming in for snuggles and kisses more fun, and making friends with a staff person who stopped in to say hello even better than that. Our handsome, affectionate, lively boy is hoping you’ll stop by to meet him today.

Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure, tail wagging, ears back. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, grabs leash to tug at onset of game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, does not fully engage. Summary: Calla jumped up and mouthed throughout assessment, did not apply any pressure. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Calla has begun display concerning behavior while interacting with other dogs in the care center. Calla has begun to become uncomfortable during off leash socialization and has been observed to stiffen, growl, and follow other dogs when solicited. Calla has been observed to become tense when attempting to mount. The behavior department feels that Calla should remain the only resident dog in a home until follow up on his behavior outside the care center. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:12/29/2016 Calla was tense and nervous during his initial medical exam. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 1/3/2017 Calla has begun growling and baring teeth when approached in his kennel.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5): Calla has shown no aggression but is an exuberant dog who may intimidate young children. We recommend a home without very young kids, though dog-savvy children can be considered pending interaction. _X_Single pet home: See Playgroup and GroupBehavior sections for additional information _X_ Recommend no dog parks: Calla has displayed high levels of discomfort around other dogs in the care center Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Calla may benefit from training to learn body awareness/ not to jump up. At times he jumped up onto the assessor and also onto desks/furniture. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Calla was mouthy during several assessment items, but did not apply any pressure. He may benefit from only engaging in play with toys in hand, never with hands only. _X_ Kennel presence: While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Calla may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
12/29/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Calla has begun display concerning behavior while interacting with other dogs in the care center. 12/29: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Calla approaches and offers polite greeting. As he becomes more comfortable, he begins to solicit play. Calla’s solicitation becomes pushy and continues to solicit from dogs who are less interested. 12/30: Calla engages in running play with male and female dogs. He eventually focuses more on mounting a male with a tense body and is difficult to distract. A playful female dog attempts to solicit and Calla offers correction then follows her growling. 12/31: Calla is soft and greets nicely but when a female dog playbows near him, he stiffens, growls and follows her.
