06/06/2017 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes:Cali is a sweet heart. That face of hers will make your heart melt. She is very friendly and loving, she displays affection through every course of interaction. Around strangers she is very happy, with a lose wiggly body and that wagging tail of hers, she greets anyone that she stumbles across. When I first met Cali, she immediately ran to me and gave me a hug. She loves rubs and she loves being the center of attention. She is good with people. Nonetheless, I love this little sunshine and I would love it even more if she were to get a forever home. Come see her at BACC!!

Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Rambunctious, playful. Behavior toward dogs: Anxious Behavior toward cats: Relaxed and tolerant. Resource guarding: Cali will lower her head (guarding), and growl. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Cali has a high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/1/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Summary: Cali was very friendly and affectionate towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: According to Cali’s previous guardian, when Cali sees another dog while on a walk, she will yelp loudly and pull to get towards the dog. She has a loose body and tries to play. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Cali greets a novel male dog displaying slightly stiff and uncomfortable body language. She relaxes as the session continues and begins to solicit gentle play. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 5/30/17: Upon intake Cali had a loose wiggly body; as soon as counselor approached she wagged her tail, yelped and jumped on counselor. She sniffed and licked counselor’s hand. Cali was scanned (negative) and collared. Cali sat for a photo and showed great interest in the squeaky toys inside the admissions office. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/31/17: Cali was social and friendly, allows all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Due to potential food guarding behavior. Cali gave an appropriate warning of her discomfort (growl) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Angela can be left alone while eating so she does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Cali is reported to growl over food. She should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so Cali learns that dropping food or having people around while she is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org
