PROFILE 04/02/17:
Basic Information:
Cali is a 6 year old female Shih Tzu/Maltese Mix that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Cali for almost 6 years but had to surrender due to moving.
Socialization:
According to the owner, around strangers, Cali will growl and air snaps around someone she does not know and needs a couple of days to warm up to a stranger. Once she is comfortable, she will play gently. Owner has 3 kids in the home ages 10, 16 and 18 and stated that she was always relaxed and respectful around her children but will growl around children she does not know. Owner did not have any other animals in the home so behavior is unknown. Cali does not have a bite history.
Behavior:
Cali is not bothered by fireworks or thunderstorms, when the owner would take away her food, treats or toys, being pushed off furniture, being held/restrained, being disturbed while sleeping, being given a bath , having her feet touched, or having her coat brushed. When unfamiliar people would approach owner’s home or owner, Cali will bark. Owner stated that Cali would usually bark the whole time that a stranger would come over to the house.
For a New Family to Know:
Cali is described as friendly, affectionate, playful and independent. She has a medium to high activity level and likes to play with balls and bones. In the home, she would follow the owner around from room to room and like to snuggle with the owner. Cali was kept mostly indoors and is house trained. She only had an accident 2x in the home where she urinated out of the 6 years the owner has had her. In the home, Cali was fed dry food only brand Beneful. When Cali was left alone in the home, she was always well behaved. Cali is crate trained and would spend several hours a day in a crate without any issues. She knows the cues come and go in the cage. For exercise, owner would take Cali on brisk walks on the leash or go jogging with Cali. When on the leash, she tends to pull very hard. Owner was able to walk Cali off leash and stated she would stay right next to the owner but with anyone else, she will run away.
Behavior during intake: Cali had a tense body and was trying to hide behind owner during intake. When counselor approached, Cali began to growl. Counselor had owner scan Cali for a mc and collar but was able to take a picture without any issues.

4/2/17
Summary: Cali lunged and snapped multiple times when attempts to interact were made. Cali remains highly uncomfortable in the care center and has displayed no social behavior. Out of concern for her stress level, a SAFER assessment will not be conducted; the behavior department recommends placement with a New Hope rescue partner may benefit her best at this time.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Summary
PLAYGROUP:
Cali keeps to herself in a group of small male and female dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
4/2/17
During her initial medical examination, Cali was fearful and tense, attempting to snap.
ENERGY LEVEL:
Cali maintains a low energy in the care centers though we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only
_X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Cali is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
_X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home/shelter environment, the behavior department recommends Cali be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Cali to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Cali to new and unfamiliar situations
Potential challenges:
_X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Cali has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over her. It is important to always go slow and give Cali the option to walk away from any social interaction. Cali should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Cali’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Cali would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
_X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Group Behavior::
According to Cali’s previous owner, Cali has not been around other dogs.
04/04/17:
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Cali keeps to herself and runs away when a dog attempts to greet her. She offers an appropriate air snap as a warning when a dog is closer than her comfort level.
04/05/17-04/07/17:
Cali keeps to herself in a group of small male and female dogs.
