09/21/17 19:51 During intake: Cadet had a loose body and waggy tail during the intake. He was transported loose in the car by the police officers who transported him to our care center. Cadet was attached to the police officer that brought him and started howling when the officer exit the building. Cadet sat nicely for treats and licked the admissions counselor gently. His mouth was open and tongue hanging out. He lay on the floor awaiting his medical evaluation.

A volunteer writes: “And they called it puppy looooove”…just one date is all it takes. Meet this gorgeous boy once, and you’ll be singing his praises for days, weeks, and years to come! Gorgeous Cadet goes straight to the top of the class with easy A grades in friendliness and playfulness, excellent scores on cuddleability and of course, the prestigious title of class clown, too. He’s literally leaps and bounds ahead of the competition when it comes to energy levels, charming all his teachers with snuggles and kisses, and showing off his ‘sit’ without a word being spoken–just knowing he might be rewarded with a treat is enough for this bright cookie! Other than socializing with friends, Cadet’s favorite pastimes are exploring the great outdoors, playing tug-o-war with a plushie (no guarding!) or dashing after a tennis ball. He does need a confidence boost in the playground, but greets other pups politely. With the right four-legged companion (respectful, gentle and patient), he’ll soon learn there’s nothing to fear. Smart as can be and with enough pent up energy to power a small city, Cadet is definitely a pet for the big of heart, not the faint of heart, and he’s hoping to find an active family (no little kids please) with as much get-up-and-go as himself. KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/21/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/24/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog jumps up, mouths Assessor, grabs leash in mouth. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Cadet displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment. He was at times very mouthy, applying moderate to hard pressure. He was social throughout, seeking attention and jumping up repeatedly. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 9/22: When introduced off leash to male and female dogs, Cadet initially greets politely then displays fearful body language, tucking his tail and running away from interaction, providing appropriate signals when he is cornered (slight growl). INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Cadet had a loose body and wagging tail. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/21/17 During his initial medical exam, Cadet was active and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Cadet so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to being very mouthy on his assessment, sometimes applying hard pressure, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised.
