10/07/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/07/16 16:21 BASICS: Byron is a six year old brown brindle american pit bull terrier. He came into our care center as an owner surrender. He had been in his owner’s care for the past five years. His owner brought him in because he is working long hours and feels that he is no longer able to give him the time he deserves. SOCIALIZATION: He will approach strangers with a loose wiggly body. He had also shared his home with three children, a toddler and two teenagers. He had allowed the children to handle him and had been playful around them. Aside from walks to the park he had not spent much time around dogs. However on his walks if he would see a dog nearby he would attempt to smell them and will enagage if they were playful towards him. BEHAVIOR: He uses the bathroom outside when his owner would take him for walks. When his owner had been gone for long periods of time he would wait until his owner came home to talk him out. He does not appear to be scared of fireworks or other stimuli. He barks only when someone knocks on the door, but aside from that he is not all that vocal. With regards to his food he does not mind when people approach his food. Similarly he is not bothered when others touch his toys or treats. He loves water and will from time to time jump into the shower with his owner. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW: Overall his demeanor is friendly and affectionate. He has energy levels but that is easily fixed with daily walks to his favorite park. Some of his favorite activities aside from running around in the park, include playing tug with a rope. He is crate trained and will go inside to sleep and when his owner tells him to. He know some commands such as sit and get up. On walks he will pull in anticipation of his walk but will walk by your side with some coaxing. He has a tendency to take his leash into his mouth and attempt to give it to the person who is going to walk him. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE: In the office Byron had been full of energy and curious of his new surroundings. He sat by his owner’s side when his owner called him over. He allowed the counselor to approach him and pet him on his head and side. He was moving around a bit when the counselor tried to collar him but with time relaxed and sat still.
10/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Byron’s head is so big I had to expand my leash in order to slip it over his head. Blockhead alert!! And, he’s awesome! Surrendered to our care as his person started working longer hours and was unable to care for him, Byron joins us with a stellar resume. He lived well with three children, a toddler and two teens, would engage with dogs on walks if they solicited him, is housetrained (check), doesn’t guard his things, and loves water from time to time jumping into the shower with his person! Do I hear an awwwwwwwwwwwwwww :). We’re told he’s friendly and affectionate (check and check), loves to play tug, go on runs, is crate trained and will go inside to sleep if told to and will sometimes take his leash in his mouth and give it to the person who is going to be walking him. There’s sure a lot of ‘awwwwwwwww’s’ about Byron. In the park he ignored birds and squirrels, came up on the bench to give me kisses, showed off his sit and took treats gently. A big bruiser of a boy, he’s gentle and sweet; a proven family dog who hopes a new person or family is looking for someone just like him. We hope so too as he’s a pretty special fellow. Come meet him today.

Summary: Byron pulls hard on leash, may benefit from walking with a harness and training for proper leash manners. He may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, play; Byron displayed no concern during his behavior assessment. PLAYGROUP: 10/11: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Byron approaches, sniffs, then roams away and explores the yard. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/8/2016 During his initial medical examination, Bryon readily allowed all handling without issue. ENERGY LEVEL: IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: During his stay at our care centers, Byron has become increasingly difficult to refocus/manage while on walks as he easily becomes aroused, making attempts to grab at the leash. Due to his stress level, Byron is unlikely to thrive in the shelter environment and should move into a home as quickly as possible. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
10/11/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
10/11: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Byron approaches, sniffs, then roams away and explores the yard. Previous owner cites “Aside from walks to the park he had not spent much time around dogs. However on his walks if he would see a dog nearby he would attempt to smell them and will enagage if they were playful towards him. ” Due to limited history and observation, the behavior department feels that Bundles would highly benefit from having a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatibility with a resident dog. 10/20: Byron initially attempts to mount female dogs, however does respond well to their correction. He ceases attempt and instead wanders the yard by himself. 10/21: Byron is anxious in the yard–whining, pacing and barking at gates. He briefly sniffs the female dog from behind, but once corrected he walks away and continues whining.
