03/17/17 13:17 Buttermilk was found tethered in the park. The founder said she was sweet with strangers but that she did not like other dogs. She arrived with a very loose body and tail wagging. 03/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/17/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/19/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 5. Dog jumps up and snaps at assessor. Summary: Buttermilk became quickly over aroused during tag, she jumped up and snapped at the assessor. The rest of the assessment was not conducted due to this behavior. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing (tucked tail, head low, snarling etc), defensive posturing (lunging, barking, snarling etc.) or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. They will emit warning signals to the other dog to back away but if they are forced to interact they may snap. PLAYGROUP: 3/18: Buttermilk approaches a male dog through a barrier and quickly stiffens then barks and snaps; a muzzle is placed for her off-leash interaction. She is defensive once introduced; she maintains a tense body and will snap when the helper dog approaches her. Once she is given space she becomes a bit more comfortable and will approach him from behind to sniff and walk away. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/17/17 During her initial medical exam, Buttermilk was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Buttermilk so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how quickly Buttermilk becomes over aroused, we recommend a home without children. _X_Single-pet home: Buttermilk has shown concerning behaviors when interacting off-leash with other dogs. She maintains a stiff body and will growl/snap when dogs approach; at this time she has not been safely introduced without a muzzle. _X_Recommend no dog parks: Any future interactions should be conducted on a one-on-one basis. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Buttemilk’s behavior on her assessment of snapping at the assessor during tag, we feel that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment will best to setup Buttermilk for success in a future adoptive home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal (Buttermilk became quickly over aroused on her assessment, jumping up and snapping at the assessor during tag. She will need careful management in a calm home and positive reinforcement, force-free training to work on this behavior. Work with a professional trainer or behaviorist is highly advised.) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Buttermilk stiffens, lunges, growls and snaps when dogs approach while she is on-leash as well as when she is greeting through a barrier. Though this may be attributed to her stress level in the shelter, we suggest exercising caution when walking Buttermilk in areas that may be highly trafficked by dogs.
03/18/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Buttermilk has shown concerning behaviors both on and off-leash around other dogs. Upon seeing dogs she will stiffen, lunge and snap; she exhibits similar behaviors when off-leash as well. She arrived to the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends not placing Buttermilk into a home with other dogs at this time. 3/18: Buttermilk approaches a male dog through a barrier and quickly stiffens then barks and snaps; a muzzle is placed for her off-leash interaction. She is defensive once introduced; she maintains a tense body and will snap when the helper dog approaches her. Once she is given space she becomes a bit more comfortable and will approach him from behind to sniff and walk away. 3/19: Buttermilk stiffens and barks at the fence. She is muzzled again for her second interaction. She remains tense when approached, growls, snaps and retreats.
