12/01/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Butter is a cute and stringy little guy with a puppy face and big astonished eyes. Butter comes right away to his door when he sees someone in front of his kennel. His tail wags like a fan and his expression is so hopeful. He licks my hand and is quickly leashed. Butter is a dancing puppet , all excited to exit his den and go for a stroll. He is quite a good walker though, possibly house trained and glad to meet other pooches on the way. Depsite the fact that he arrived underweight and in need of skin care, he is quite a sweet gent, loves treats and petting. He does have a tendency to mount, though. But experienced hands, a calm and nurturing environment, as well as behavior modification can bring back Butter on steady grounds and foster socially acceptable manners. Butter is too adorable not to give him a chance. He likes people, he likes dogs and will make a very nice forever best friend. Butter is waiting at the Manhattan Care Center for his new owner and teacher.
11/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/29/16 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, attempting to mount the assessor’s leg. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, is focused on mounting the Assessor’s leg and nothing else. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Butter was completely focused on mounting the assessor’s leg throughout the assessment and was unable to be refocused. He allowed all handling though intensely attempting to get back to the assessor’s leg when taken away. Due to the anxious behavior displayed in shelter, Butters may do best in an experienced home with no young children until he is able to acclimate to a new home environment. PLAYGROUP: 11/28: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Butter persistently attempts to mount the female greeter dog. He also attempts to mount his human handlers. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/27/16 During his initial medical exam Butter allowed all handling but was mounting the people handling him. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience(Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
11/28/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Butter arrived as a stray with no available history of interaction with other dogs. Butter has only displayed interest in persistantly mounting other dogs of both sexes. At this time, Butter should be allowed time to decompress as the only resident dog outside of the care center before followup on his behavior around other dogs. 11/28: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Butter persistantly attempts to mount the female greeter dog. He also attempts to mount his human handlers. 11/29: Butter continues only to attemp to mount.
