A volunteer writes:  Open any fashion magazine and you’ll see that plus sizes are totally “in”, making Miss Butter way ahead of her time!   Adorably chunky Butter was surrendered to our care due to the NYCHA ban.  Butter lived with her former family since she was an itty bitty puppy so this change is hard on her and she’s doing an admirable job of making new friends.   We’re told she’s super friendly to everyone and loves attention and petting.  Indeed, she sat by my feet while I took some notes, laying her head on my leg so that I could pet her, closing her eyes to savor the touch.   We’re also told she plays gently with small children, and is playful and gentle with other dogs and with cats.  She loves to sleep and had multiple beds in her former home, and is quite comfortable being by herself.  She loves baths and being brushed, and doesn’t even mind getting her nails trimmed. Butter knows how to ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘give paw’ when asked, and of course a reward treat is always appreciated!!   I loved meeting Butter; she’s great on leash enjoying a slow walk after going potty outside, wags her tail at everyone we pass, loves to cuddle and have some attention and is so calm and easy you’ll swear you’ve known her forever.  If a
new, quiet and easy best friend will complete your life you’ll want to meet Butter today.   Always happy to listen to your secrets, give you a kiss and a tail wag when you need it, Butter is hoping to find her new best friend quickly.   We’re rooting for her as she’s an awesome girl.  Come meet her today.

A volunteer writes:
A book could be written about Butter…It is not only because we love her but mostly because she is an awesome gal with all the trimmings of a GOOD family dog. Butter is a plus size model but oh so feminine , pristine, motherly and serene. What a blessing to spend time with her in the street or in the yard…I would love to have her in my home…Indeed, we are told that she is wonderful with children,  dogs and even cats…The whole nine yards…Butter who is ten year old is often found sleeping in her kennel (  she used to have her own bedroom and multiple beds through the house…). She is up in no time, though, leashed 1,2,3 ,  strolls peacefully right by my side and eliminates as soon as we hit the door. She wags softly her tail, looking at me with sad eyes. She had a family just yesterday…Other pooches are met uneventfully and she prefers the quiet company of staff when she is in playgroups with other dogs.Free in a yard, Butter looks a little around and usually settles by my side, facing me, pushing my hand with her nose when I stop caressing her or feeding her treats. She is so smart and a great communicator…She comes when called, sits on command of course and gives right and left paws on demand…How is that? Butter feels so comfortable to me, the picture perfect of Peace….Her beauty, her generous looks, her slow motion, her sweet eyes and snowy face..I am suddenly wondering…Could she fit the description of a therapy dog ? This is something to think about…Well, Butter , who is with us because of housing issues, needs a new home and a new owner or family she will bless with her loyalty, love and gentle manners. If your heart desires a calm, friendly, perceptive and loving companion, Butter is the one.. She might be ten but with a proper diet , more walks and play time, Butter could be around quite a number of years more.Come and meet her at the Manhattan Care Center. Butter is waiting for you.
BEHAVIOR :
Butter came into our center as an owner surrender citing landlord issues. It is reported she is friendly and outgoing, has been around small children/played gently and sometimes exuberantly. She is reportedly playful and gentle with other dogs and cats. Owner reports Butter isn’t bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. She is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and independent. During intake, Butter allowed all handling, super wiggly body, relaxed, sitting when asked and gave paw. She walked well on leash for her relief walk, no pulling. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. Butter stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed, ears neutral. She followed at the end of the leash slowly during Tag game, wagging tail. Butter gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. She showed no interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs, Butter approaches and sniffs politely.  She offers a loud correction when a male dog attempts to mount. Behaviorally, Butter would do well with an Average adopter.
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash slowly, body soft, tail wagging
Squeeze 1 /  2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Toy 1. No interest.
