02/22/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oversized paws, enthusiastic hugs and a flurry of sloppy kisses may not be everyone’s idea of a perfect first date, but for those of us who appreciate big-hearted pups, Butch is a match made in heaven! He falls in love with everyone he meets and isn’t shy about showing his appreciation, jumping up for snuggles and always ready to turn the simplest walk into a game of follow-the-leader-as-closely-
02/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 02/17/17 Intact, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 02/19/17 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy or rawhide to you. Dog-Dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Summary: Butch readily allowed all handling without issue, he remained soft and social throughout assessment though becomes easily aroused, making attempts to grab at the leash and mouth assessor/assistant (light pressure applied). Butch did readily de-escalate with the use of toys and treats to refocus his attention. DOG-TO-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Hyper-motivated: These dogs come on too strong and have coarse social skills. They have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs and were most likely deprived of off- leash contact. They are overly excited when meeting new dogs, often up in the other dog’s face and not able to read subtle signals to back off, which can quickly lead to a scuffle. PLAYGROUP: The behavior department feels that Butch would be most compatible with other playful dogs, based on behavior observed in the care center. Due to arriving as a stray, history around dogs is unknown.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 02/17/17 During his initial medical examination, Butch readily allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Butch so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: 3/3/17 Butch is social and affectionate with humans and other dogs, but has some trouble walking on leash, causing him to panic and thrash at times. We are concerned that the shelter environment may be causing some of this stress, and we recommend that he move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. He has displayed consistent leash-biting behavior that can be difficult to handle. He also does this on his way to and from playgroup. He was initially highly playful in playgroup, but now sprints around the pen while biting his own leash or at the drag leashes of other dogs, and does not engage with them otherwise. At this point Butch needs more enrichment and outlets for his energy than can be provided in a kennel environment.” RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Decreasing the force of the mouth as well as the frequency of mouthing, in this order is recommended by using force-free, reward based training as well to reinforce a soft appropriate mouth and redirect hard inappropriate mouthing onto toys.
03/01/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
The behavior department feels that Butch would be most compatible with other playful dogs, based on behavior observed in the care center. Due to arriving as a stray, history around dogs is unknown. 3/1: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Butch engages in exuberant, mouthy play. He at times continues to solicit from dogs who offer warnings and indication that they are uncomfortable. 3/2: Butch continues to engage in rough, running play with other dogs. He often becomes over aroused and will continuously bark/mouth at the other dogs despite correction. 3/3-3/7: Butch engages briefly in play with other dogs, though mostly runs throughout the pen while engaging himself.
