05/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Buster A1111448 KNOWN HISTORY: None 05/08/17 Intact male, Stray Other notes: Upon intake, Buster was friendly and active. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 05/10/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on the Assessor and all other stimuli available. His body is soft, likely panting, likely to display high movement between attempts. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body tense and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Buster remained anxious throughout the assessment; whining, barking, seeking exit. He tolerated most handling though when attempted to engage play, Buster becomes startled and body checks the assessor though he readily refocused. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Buster solicits and engages in play with female and small male dogs. He may occasionally attempt to mount a female dog growls at larger male dogs. Buster was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Buster be placed with female dogs that match his gentle play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 05/08/17 During his initial medical examination, Buster was friendly and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: In the care center Buster has been active and enthusiastic. Due to the anxiety seen, he may need some guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Buster will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13): Buster has displayed a low threshold for arousal during his stay at the care center in additional to high levels of anxiety, for this reason a home without children is advised until Buster can decompress and acclimate to a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Buster to new and unfamiliar situations to set him up for success. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended. _X_Anxiety: Buster has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER. This behavior was not reported at intake and due to lack of known history we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment though recommend practicing positive force-free reward based training when introducing or exposing Spartacus to new and unfamiliar situations.

05/09/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION

They are not introduced. He solicits and engages in gentle play with a female dog. 5/17: Buster displays soft body language when greeting a novel female dog.
