10/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/22/16 20:32 Basic information: Buster is a roughly 1 yr. old Am Pit Bull mix. The Owner got her from a friend as a gift; he has owned Buster for a year. The owner surrendered Buster because Buster is sick (had loose stool and weight loss) and he no longer wants Buster in the home. Buster was last seen by a vet in May of 2016 (before the health problems came up) and there were no serious problems. Socialization: Around strangers Buster is friendly playful. Buster has not lived with children but he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know. Buster has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that Buster is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. For a new family to know: The owner describes Buster as friendly, affectionate and playful with a medium activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Buster tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Buster knows the commands “sit “and “stay”. Behavior during intake: Buster was relaxed with lose body. Allowed to be scanned (+), collared and placing in dog kennel.
10/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A two-toned nose and a Groucho Marx eyebrow…Buster is seriously adorable. And he’s smart — not only does he seem to be housetrained, he may also be curb-trained as he hopped right off the sidewalk to take care of his business. Going back a step, he gave me a big stand up hug as we waited for the elevator, looking into my eyes to seal our friendship. He had me right then and there! Buster has lovely leash manners, pulling slightly from time to time, but each time he checks up with me as we walk, I love him more. Noticing but ignoring other dogs of all sizes we pass on our way to the park, he was calm and easy in his first playgroup. Buster was surrendered by his owner, and we’re told that he’s friendly and playful around strangers, adults and children (check), doesn’t guard his stuff (check) and is affectionate and playful (check), and knows sit and stay (check). I can add that he leaned in close for petting, rolled over for a belly rub, loved playing softly with some soft toys, and picked one up when I Ieashed him to go back into his kennel. So cute! Quiet, soft, sweet, and described by his former person as having a medium activity level, Buster is a gem. If I had to pick one word to describe his personality as I’ve experienced it, it would be SOFT. Come meet our resident sweetheart and see for yourself.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful. Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: Not bothered if his food or treats are moved when he is eating. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Friendly, affectionate and playful with a medium activity level. Energy level/descriptors: Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/24/2016 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands, grabs and focuses on leash Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans away from assessor, focused on leash Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, grabs and tugs with leash, vocalizing. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks assessor’s hand Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, sniffs, licks, then turns away. Summary: Although focused on leash, Buster was easily refocused. He playfully vocalized but it was never concerning. Buster appears to be a high energy dog who needs training to learn leash manners; He may benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of exercise and play. PLAYGROUP: Buster engages in exuberant play with male and female dogs. His previous owner does not cite history around dogs, so in home behavior around them is unknown. Only one select occasion Buster displayed a tense body while interacting with a male dog larger than himself. Based on observation made while in our care, the behavior department recommends slow introductions between Buster and any resident dogs in a home. He may be most compatible with other social playful dogs. Potential adopters should keep in mind Buster’s potential selectivity when interacting with other male dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/22/16 During his initial medical exam Buster readily allowed all handling without issue. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
