A volunteer writes: “I’m late, I’m late, I’m late for a very important date”…..as I watched Buster rush around the pen that’s all I could think of…..he’s energetic, a bit anxious, adorable and will plop his butt down in a nanosecond when he knows a treat is on its way. And, he can catch them on the fly! Buster is well fed, his coat shines, he comes when called jumping up on the bench with me briefly before jumping down for further explorations. Buster and his housemate Penny (A1074427) joined us when their owner lost his home. We’re told that they lived with four cats but Buster chased the cats and often fought with a kitty. We’re also told that he doesn’t like other dogs, but Buster has been in group and seems to slowly be learning to interact with fellow canines. It may take a while before he’s completely comfortable so our behavior team recommends a home where he’s the only dog. We’re also told that Buster is housetrained, doesn’t guard his stuff, and loves to play fetch with his person. This little dynamo is looking for an active home, one in which he never has to be worried about being ‘late for his date’, ever again.
PROFILE: 5/20/16 19:24
Basic information:
Penny A1074427 (AM Pit Bull), and Buster A1074428 (English Bull dog mix) were brought in together as owner surrenders. The Owner got them from a friend as a gift; he has owned Penny and Buster for over 2 years. The owner surrendered them because he is being evicted from his home. Both Penny and Buster never been taken to a vet.
Socialization:
Around strangers Penny and Buster are very shy and protective of their home and terrotry (Will growl and lung at strangers). They have not lived with children. Penny and Buster have lived with four cats (Frankie A1074432 (DSH Cat), Odie A1074429 (DSH Cat), Curious A1074431 (DSH Cat) and Knox A1074434 (DSH Cat). Penny is plays well with the cats but Buster often fights or chases the cats. They do not like other dogs and will bark and lung at them when they are approached on the street. Penny and Buster have never bitten anyone.
Behavior:
The owner stats that Penny and Buster is not bothered when some moves their food or treats while they are eating, when someone takes their toys away or when someone disturbs them while sleeping. Penny and Buster like to be brushed and given bathes but has never had their nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or their home growl bark and snap at the person or animal. The owner does not know how Penny and Buster are around loud noises such as storms or fireworks.
For a new family to know:
The owner describes Penny and Buster as shy and protective with a medium activity level. Their favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Penny and Buster tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Penny and Buster sleep on the floor of the bedroom on a blanket. Penny and Buster were fed Pedigree dry dog food once a day. They are house trained somewhat and do have accident in the home if not walked or stressed, when outside they go to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. For exercise Penny and Buster are used to brisk walks on the leash once a month.
BEHAVIOR:
Behavior during intake: Penny and Buster were both tense with stiff bodies, when approached by staff Penny growled at the staff member but allowed slow approach, owner was able to assist us, scanned (Penny + Buster-), collared and placing in separate dog kennels.
Buster walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Buster was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He was not interested in toys.
Buster around strangers he is shy and protective of his home and territory (Will growl and lung at strangers). He had not lived with children. Buster had lived with another dog Penny A1074427 and four cats. Buster is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating or when someone takes his toys away”. Because of his owner surrender profile the behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Playgroup Notes:
Buster stiffens, growls, and snaps through the gate when greeting. He is not introduced off-leash at this time.
Buster has exhibited on-leash/barrier reactivity while at the care center. He will approach other dogs and stiffen then eventually bark and growl if the greeting lingers. When off-leash he may exhibit sexually motivated behaviors but once corrected he will coexist in the pen with the other dog. His owner reports he “does not like other dogs and will bark and lung at them when he is approached on the street.” He did live in a home with two other dogs, male and female, and the owner reports they got along. The behavior department recommends not placing Buster into a home with other dogs until his leash reactivity can be followed up on.
Buster stiffens, growls, and snaps through the gate when greeting. He is not introduced off-leash at this time.
5/25 update: Buster appears less tense-bodied. He avoids at first, but then approaches to attempt to mount. When corrected, he ceases and explores the yard.
5/26 update: Buster is tense at first, briefly sniffs then keeps to himself.
