Hello, my name is Buster . My animal id is #15862. I am a male red brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 11-Dec-2017.
Buster is being placed at risk due to behavior, New Hope Only determination. Buster has not allowed handling while in the care center and will show distance increasing behaviors such as growling when approached. There are no medical concerns for Buster at this time.

Date of intake:: 12/11/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 12/14/2017
Summary:: Buster is difficult to remove from the kennel, barking and growling when approached. He has not been able to be safely removed from his kennel. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Buster is not a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Date of intake:: 12/11/2017
Summary:: Buster did not allow handling.
Date of initial:: 12/11/2017
Summary:: Buster was growling and resisted handling.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Buster so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Buster is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Buster has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Buster has displayed fearful behavior at the care center, growling in his kennel when approached. He has been unable to be safely removed from his kennel. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Buster to new and unfamiliar situations.
