09/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Burger got a “Hi Five” on his behavioral evaluation ! Indeed, he is a friendly and social butterfly enjoying the company of people and dogs alike. Yet, life has not be clement to this youngster who came to us skinny, with long nails, and a chocolate and vanilla coat sprinkled with sores. Nothing of that, though, takes away from his natural beauty. He is quite hungry but does not snatch treats from my fingers and does not mind when my hand nears his food bowl. Burger is very welcoming in his kennel and is leashed at once. He pulls a little, strolls with a happy tail, does his business in one stop and seems very excited (in a nice way) to meet other dogs. He is bouncy with his peers in playgroups. Burger owns a sunny personality, holding no grudge against life or people. He loves to hug and to be hugged. He wants (without knowing it) to move ahead, believes in the present (right now, a safe den, some canine and human company and a guaranteed meal) and in the future that can only be good. Burger fits the definition of an optimistic survivor, a trooper, a true spirit. He is an inspiration for so many of us. Burger is at the Manhattan Care Center. Come and meet him soon. Prove him right. Bring your magic wand and open for him the doors to a life of love and plenty.
Another volunteer writes: When I came to take Burger for a walk and told him I was then moving him up to adoptions, he smiled, his tail wagged and his eyes twinkled. Yay, said Burger, I’m going to find a new home! If any dog has a right to question the intentions of the human race it would be Burger, as he’s sadly so emaciated. We’re feeding him an extra meal daily to help him gain some weight, but absolutely nothing stops this dog from loving us. There are lessons to be learned from him. He never stops wagging his tail, loves to cuddle and give kisses, happily plays and shares his toy with me climbing onto my lap with his toy in his mouth. He even enjoys a romp on his first play date! Burger deserves a happily ever after and I can’t wait to see him well fed and happy in the embrace of his new person or family. Come meet him today.
09/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Burger came to the care center as a stray so his behavior in a home is unknown. Upon intake, he appeared excited and allowed all handling. On his relief walk he pulled a little. In the assessment room he appeared friendly and social. He held the assessor’s gaze during Look, body soft and tail wagging. He leaned in during Sensitivity, eyes and body soft, mouth close. He was playful during Tag, running and jumping up softly. He did not pull back his paw on either Squeeze attempt. When off leash with other dogs Burger engages in bouncy play when solicited; he otherwise spends his time exploring the yard. The Behavior Team recommends Burger be placed in an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps softly on Assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog to Dog: When off leash with other dogs Burger engages in bouncy play when solicited. He otherwise spends his time exploring the yard.
