Bullwinkle
Hello, my name is Bullwinkle. My animal id is #11884. I am a male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 06-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Bullwinkle is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs. Bullwinkle is Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: I gotta admit, Bullwinkle does remind me of a big, good-natured moose, ready to take on adventure with his BFF Rocky (that could be you btw!) He certainly has the coloring right, and though he’s not as large, weighing in at nearly 70 pounds, he’s quite lumbering. Bullwinkle is eager to let you know he’s ready to come out…he’s always at the front of his kennel tap tapping his paws to get your attention. He does seem housetrained, and his former owner tells us that as long as he’s walked frequently enough he won’t have accidents. Bullwinkle also reportedly lived with another dog and got along with him–though he would guard his food at times. Bullwinkle is playful and tolerant with kids, likes to play with stuffed toys and is a good boy when being groomed. With me, Bullwinkle was such a good sport-he let me dress him up and accepted treats nicely in return. So, if you want to be the other half of Bullwinkle’s duo, ask to meet him today!
My medical notes are…

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Bullwinkle may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: Bullwinkle would growl and snap at other resident dog if approached his food bowl. There is no report of this being directed onto humans. We recommend that Bullwinkle be left alone while eating and nothing should ever be taken directly out of Bullwinkle’s mouth. Appropriate management around other dogs is highly recommended. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org. Fearful: The behavior department recommends allowing Bullwinkle to approach his potential new adopters at his own pace. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Bullwinkle to new and unfamiliar situations.
