MOST RECENT MEDICAL INFORMATION AND WEIGHT
01/17/2017 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 3 NC – MAJOR CONDITIONS NOT CONTAGIOUS, Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 73.8 LBS.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Buju may benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can appropriately manage and assess his behavior in a more stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Buju has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers; at times will avoid interaction and shy away from direct-touch. Buju easily startles and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement and will display proper warning signals as well as increase distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.)
01/14/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/14/17 17:55 Buju is friendly and outgoing towards strangers. He’s lived with two kids, ages 2 and 9, and is relaxed and playful with them. He plays gently with both adults and kids and has never bitten another person. He’s spent time around another Pitbull and is relaxed and playful around her. They play exuberantly together. He has also spent time around a cat and he was very respectful and tolerant of her space. During loud noises such as storms, Buju isn’t bothered and just stays alert. His owner never tried taking away his food, treats, or toys so it’s unknown how he would react in that situation. She also never pulled him off of furniture. When his owner would restrain him from something he wants, Buju wouldn’t be bothered and won’t try and go back after it. When he’s awoken from his slumber, he gets up and goes to sleep somewhere else. He tolerates baths and loves being brushed. When he’s getting his nails trimmed, he tries to move his paws but doesn’t mind getting it done. When someone unfamiliar comes towards his home or owner, he isn’t bothered but stays alert and eventually warms up (if he has a good feeling about the person). Buju’s owner describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and mellow. He has a medium activity level and when he’s ready to play he enjoys playing fetch with balls and then being chased for it back, tugging on stuffed animals, wrestling, and chewing on bones. Above all else, Buju enjoys chasing birds and cuddling with his owner. When his owner is home, he follows her around and then hangs out in the same room she’s in. He’s been kept mostly indoors and sleeps either in his bed placed in his owner’s room or on his owner’s bed. He is very house-trained and never goes potty indoors. He enjoys going potty on grass and cement outside. He’s well-behaved when left alone in the house and has never been crated. Buju knows sit, come, down, stay, and go. For exercise, he enjoys running around the dog park off-leash and brisk walks and jogs on-leash. He only pulls when he sees small animals such as squirrels and birds. Buju’s owner feeds him Blue Buffalo (chicken flavor) dry food, about 1 and a half cups, twice a day. His favorite treats are Bacon Strips.

A volunteer writes: Hellllloooo handsome! Quiet and patient in his kennel, I first need to straighten my clothes to be worthy of this gorgeous hunk. Stepping easily out of his kennel, he potties outside, confirming that he’s housetrained per his former person. We’re also told that he’s lived well with young children, spent time with another dog and was relaxed and playful with her, and has spent time with a cat, respectful and tolerant of her space. We’re told he has a medium activity level and above all else “enjoys chasing birds and cuddling with his owner”. Awwwwww. Buju and I had a ball together! He’s good on leash, didn’t mind being tethered for pictures, and even play-bowed to me at one point. Showing off his sit, Buju takes treats gently, and back in a pen he loves playing with toys. He snorts, purrs and chatters as he plays and snuggles, and the best? He does the best butt scratch shuffle ever, wiggle, wiggle, step, step — he’s hysterical!! In his first play group, he was solicitous and playful with the male dog, chattering as he played. At that perfect age, with young dog energy and crazies behind him, and a lifetime of mellow, easy play and cuddling in front of him, Buju is hoping you’ll come meet him today.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults, children ages two and nine Behavior toward children: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed and playful Behavior toward cats: Respectful and tolerant of a cat he spend time with FG/RG: Unknown Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Buju is housetrained Energy level/descriptors: Buju’s previous owner described him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and mellow with a medium activity level. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 01/17/17 Summary: When the assessor went to touch Buju’s collar, he froze and hard starred. The assessment was not conducted. This behavior has been observed at other times in the care center, showing that Buju is uncomfortable with up close handling here. The behavior department believes that Buju may best succeed with placement through a rescue partner who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment. PLAYGROUP: 1/15: When introduced off leash to a male dog, Buju is playful and solicitous. He playfully growls and air-snaps, chatters while bowing and bouncing. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/14/17 During his initial medical exam Buju appeared friendly and allowed most handling but did not like his forepaws being touched. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Buju has allowed some forms of handling during his stay at our care center though appears highly uncomfortable with up close handling and has been observed (more than two occasions) to become stiff and will hard eye handler. To avoid escalation, the behavior department advises allowing Buju to interact at his own pace and never forcing any forms of interaction.

A Volunteer Writes:
Love! Love! Love! He’s a love, and we love him! We would draw hearts around this mellow, sweet, loving dog’s name if we could. Buju is so generous–he is quite thin, but he takes treats so gently and with such gratitude. He appears house trained but waits so patiently in his kennel for his turn to go out–he is incredibly undemanding and low key, just grateful for love and attention and especially for having his back scratched. Buju’s idea of happiness is to stand very close to his walker and just hang out (with the occasional back scratch.) What a dog, what a pet! Please come whisk him home!
