01/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Buddy came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported Buddy is fearful and shy around strangers but warms up slowly. Owner reports Buddy has lived with a five year old child, playing gently. It is reported once in the past Buddy bit the owner’s sister when taking away the food bowl. Owner reports Buddy does not allow his food, toys, or treats to be taken away. Owner states Buddy is housetrained to use the bathroom outside, mostly on cement on the corner of the curb. It is reported he is well behaved when left home alone. Buddy was nervous during intake. He retreated to the back of the kennel once placed inside. Buddy was hesitant to come out of his kennel for his relief walk. Once outside, he was a bit more relaxed, walked well (no pulling) and eliminated immediately. He was friendly but a bit cautious upon entering the SAFER assessment room. Buddy allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body neutral. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity, slight lip lick. Buddy was uncomfortable during Tag game, keeping in front of assessor majority of the time, spinning away on third pass. He pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Buddy showed no interest in Toy, but this may be due to environment as owner reports he is playful with toys. When off leash with other dogs, Buddy offers soft solicitation and will engage in some play. Based on this Buddy’s bite history and reports of guarding multiple items in the home, he must be placed with a New Hope partner. He would benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction as Buddy became more sociable as he became comfortable in the SAFER room. Buddy may benefit initially from a calm, quiet structured home so he can relax and know what to expect. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, mouth closed, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful, hesitant to follow leash, spins away on last pass. Squeeze 1: 2.
