A volunteer writes:

“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” There is much wisdom to be gleaned from the teachings of Buddha but this one lives among my favorites. Certainly on a recent, sticky afternoon, our 4 year-old Buddha lived in only the here and now. I was immediately drawn to this special boy with his gorgeous markings and megawatt smile. I first spy him sitting quietly in his kennel. Calm, beautiful, and serene, like a lotus flower suspended in still, muddy waters. Once outside Buddha pulled slightly on leash but only because he had business to attend to. (There’s nothing quite like the “here and now” than that of Nature’s call.) Once that was addressed he was content to sit a spell with me on the warm pavement, smiling, and panting, enjoying treats and especially toys. Lovely Buddha was surrendered to our care as his owner, who adopted him from ACC two years ago, left him with a friend and simply never returned. A painful slight for our sweet boy to be sure. But if Buddha has cause for resentment or ill will, well that’s news to him and he carries neither one. Buddha is bright, sweet, and trusting. He eagerly accepts pets from me again and again, and I can feel with every touch that we are increasingly closer friends.  As he nibbles lightly on his toy, oblivious to passersby and the movements of the city around him, he is happy as a child tearing through paper on Christmas morning, and this moment is all he knows. “No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.” Another piece of Buddha’s wisdom. Of course it’s impossible for us to know much about our Buddha’s past. But of his chance for a bright, new future? Of that we are sure. Buddha is waiting to have his belly rubbed at Manhattan’s ACC.

PROFILE:

BASIC INFO

Buddha is a 4 year old neutered APBT mix. His previous owner left him with his current caretaker 1.5 weeks ago and didn’t return for him.

SOCIALIZATION

Buddha is friendly/outgoing with new people. He’s relaxed, playful, and tolerant with children. He plays gently with people. When he sees other dogs outside, he wiggles and wags his tail. His caretaker would ask him to sit for the other dog to pass and he would. He hasn’t bit anyone.

BEHAVIOR

Buddha has no known behavior issues. He doesn’t mind storms. He’s friendly when someone takes his food/treat/toy. He doesn’t mind baths. He allows strangers to pet him.

FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW

Buddha’s family describes him as friendly, happy, affectionate, playful, mellow, and medium energy. He follows his caretaker. He plays with kongs. He lived inside and slept in a crate with a bed that was left open at night. He ate dry dog food with lamb and got lamb as a treat. He’s housetrained, potties in grass, and doesn’t have accidents. He’s well-behaved while left home alone in his crate. He gives paw and goes inside his crate when asked. He went for brisk walks and runs and pulls on his leash. He spends short periods of time outside to go potty and then brings his caretaker back inside.

INTAKE

Buddha had a soft body during intake and whined to solicit attention.
