06/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bucatini came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray. He allowed all handling during intake. Bucatini was nervous but tolerant during his initial medical exam. He was cautious and alert upon entering SAFER assessment room, eyes wide and became wider whenever approached. He warmed up somewhat with gentle coaxing, allowed positioning and handling. Bucatini allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, cautious and a bit tense, eyes averted. He stood still during Sensitivity item, tense, lip lick. Bucatini followed at the end of the leash during Tag game, uncomfortable and focused on assessor’s movements. He was trembling during positioning for Squeeze item. Bucatini gently pulled his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He showed no interest in Toy. He did not approach the helper dog, tail straight out. On the way back to his kennel, a volunteer approached and attempted to pet Bucatini above his head and he backed away/growled and barked. The Behavior Team feels Bucatini would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have children. He would benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, preferably with gentle soothing voice, so he can relax and warm up at his own pace. We do not recommend direct approach at the front or top of his head until he is comfortable. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body is alert and a bit tense, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense, mouth closed, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched, focused on assessor’s movements Squeeze 1 / 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog, tail straight out. 6/8 update: Bucatini is not thriving in the kennel enviornment. He continues to show fearful body language and is uncomfortable with new people. He may growl when approached and avoids returning to his kennel. Due to his level of fear and stress, we feel he should move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible.
