06/10/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/10/17 13:02 Basic Info: Bubba A1107966 is an 11mth old male brown & white short haired mix who was born at home & is being surrendered due to too many pets. He hasn’t been seen by a vet & currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Bubba is shy for several minutes with strangers. He was gentle, exuberant (at times) relaxed & playful with the adults and 2yr & 3yr old children in the home. Bubba hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal. He lived with 5 dogs & 2 neutered cats for about 8mths (cats) and was relaxed, playful and very rough at play with them at times. Behavior: Bubba isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved or being brushed. He hasn’t been disturbed while sleeping/resting, wasn’t allowed on the furniture or had his nails trimmed. Bubba struggles to get away during baths. If someone unfamiliar approaches the home/family member he’ll bark, back away then hide/stay away from them. For A New Family to Know: Bubba is described as playful, shy, excitable & reserved with a medium-high activity level. When the owner is home he stays to himself. Bubba enjoys ball, stuffed, rope toys & games of tug & chase. He sleeps on a dog bed, eats Pedigree dry food 2x a day & isn’t housebroken. Bubba is an indoor mostly dog that is let out to the yard 3-4x a day and his known commands is “sit” that he doesn’t always listen to. Bubba is placed in his crate when left home alone due to him not being housebroken also at times when people come over. Intake Behavior: Bubba allowed handling with the assistance from the owner due to them stating he isn’t too friendly at times. He allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of. Bubba walked alongside the owner (pulling a bit due to appearing scared/nervous) and was lifted into the kennel which he didn’t seem to mind.

He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Bubba appeared fearful and shut down during his assessment. He stood in one place and remained motionless. He allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing, defensive posturing, or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Bubba has not displayed social behavior toward dogs in the care center, and attempts to avoid them during interaction. The behavior department recommends allowing Bubba time to decompress in a new environment before immediate introductions to unfamiliar dogs. Future introductions should be supervised, and conducted at a slow pace. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 6/10/17 Upon intake, Bubba allowed handling but was tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/11/17 During his initial medical exam, Bubba appeared timid but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Bubba’s previous owner described him as having a medium-high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Bubba has remained fearful in his kennel throughout his stay at the shelter, staying at the back and avoiding interaction. He has shown some progress in his interactions with other dogs and with his caretakers outside of his kennel, but is unlikely to thrive in this environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to how shut down and fearful Bubba currently is, we recommend a home without young children. Older, gentle children should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Bubba currently appears fearful and shut down at the care center, remaining motionless most of the time. He has not displayed any social behavior and will need a lot of time and patience. It is important to always go slow and give Bubba the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bubba should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bubba’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bubba would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
