A volunteer writes: I stumbled across Bub’s Match.com ad: “Me: Single, white and grey male, good looking but need a little TLC for my coat. I love to take walks and meet new people. My tail is always wagging, and I love treats and take them gently. I’m polite with female dogs I’ve met in my temporary home, and haven’t yet been paired with a male for playgroup. The best thing about me is that I’m a super cuddler, happiest when rolling into my person, giving kisses, and generally just being close. I’m told I have a great smile, and gorgeous, intelligent eyes. I’m a lover, and looking for my soul mate, so if you think we’re a good match, let’s meet. More marriages were made on Match, so let’s add to the statistics! You: Looking for a white and grey male, good looking, and a super cuddler for a lifetime of love and snuggles.” Volunteer comment: Bub is a doll, and if a sweet, fun loving partner is your ideal four-legged companion, Bub would love to meet you. He loves treats, so will be easy to train with positive reinforcement (treats!!). I fell in love; you will too. Another volunteer writes: Wiggle, wag, wiggle, wag–that’s the greeting you’ll get when you approach Bub’s kennel. Ready to rush out the door to go potty, he’s then ready for some hugs, some play, and some fun. Lively is the hallmark of his personality, with lots of timeout for cuddling. Bub is hoping a fun, active and affectionate family or person is ready to make him theirs.
08/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/3/17 Look: 3. Dog consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Bub consistently shoulder rubbed throughout the assessment, making himself very difficult to position. He was distracted, sniffing around the room and the assessor’s pants, but was not social with the assessor. During squeeze, he became stiff and quickly head flipped when his paw was touched. PLAYGROUP: Bub approaches and greets female dogs politely, though remains distracted during interactions. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog while in our care. At this time, the behavior department allows Bub an initial period of decompression outside the shelter environment before immediate introductions to unfamiliar dogs. Future introductions should be supervised, and conducted at a slow pace to well socialized dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Bub was tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/1/17 During his initial medical exam, Bub was tense, resisted handling, and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Bub so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is an enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to potential handling sensitivities seen on his assessment, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Bub became tense and head flipped when his paw was touched, showing discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Bub’s paws at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bub to be more comfortable with this. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Bub seems uncomfortable at times in the care center, and snapped in medical when fearful. It is important to always go slow and give Bub the option to walk away from any social interaction. Bub should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Bub’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Bub would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
