Bruno
Hello, my name is Bruno. My animal id is #10129. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 7 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 18-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won’t allow.
Bruno is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Upper Respiratory Disease Complex which is contagious to other dogs. He will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. There are no know behavior concerns for Bruno at this time (Average determination).
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Bruno is with us for no fault of his own. His family was evicted and he too is now homeless and hoping to start his life again with a new owner. Yes, like kids, pets can not do it alone….They need us…Bruno has been so well cared for. The perfect weight, a gorgeous seasonal coat, short nails and a strong affinity for people. He appears house trained, was taught to sit for a treat and to play ball…He seems even good with other dogs in the street and in playgroups with his peers. Bruno is understandably a little stressed wondering what is this sudden change in scenery and protagonists….Where does he stand? Where does he go from here? This is why maybe he sometimes feebly complains, displaying a wary little face and asking for comfort from his caretakers. Bruno absolutely loves butt scratches and wiggles like a Chinese New Year Dragon… He is a very handsome dog! A strong one too who pulls on the leash, does his business in the street, ignores pigeons and does not respond to dogs trying to look for trouble. He loves to play ball and will relentlessly run close to the ground, jump high in the air and performs amazing head shots. I forgot to say that he can catch treats in mid air… Playing is serious business to Bruno.. Bruno was loved, I believe and treated like a pet should be…Let’s hope that a new and happy debut is in the cards for Bruno… Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer writes: Remember Tattoo from Fantasy Island calling out, ‘The plane, the plane’. If so you can certainly hear Bruno calling out, ‘The ball, the ball”!! Bruno is a master ball player. He waits for the throw, eyes sparkling, tail wagging, mouth slightly open in excitement and anticipation. I’m not sure who had more fun playing, him or me! He always brings it back for another throw, not quite at my feet, but close. At one time we had two balls in play and when they landed close to one another he nosed one, then the other, then the first, clearly not knowing which to pick up. Bruno is a gorgeous red head, likely housetrained, nice clean coat and perfect weight. He enjoys treats, taking them with the very edge of his teeth, so gently I barely feel it. When there’s a ball around, petting comes in second, so while we snuck in a few petting sessions, it was all about ‘the ball, the ball’. A few demand ‘woof’s’ if I was too slow with my throw kept me on my toes. Bruno pulls hard on the leash so a harness and some leash training will help make both sides of the leash enjoy a walk. He’s ready to be the star of your home team, so come meet him today.

Pre-surgical exam, anesthesia, and surgery performed by ASPCA. Green linear tattoo placed lateral to incision. Start 1 tablet of rimadyl 100 mg sid po x 3 days as pain management.

Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, ears are back, tail is down, relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.

Summary:: In the assessment room, Bruno appeared anxious, whining, focusing on the exit, and pacing. He approached the assessor when called and displayed social behavior but continued to whine. Bruno allowed all handling.
Summary (1):: Bruno has been polite greeting female dogs in the care center, at times engaging in play with intent to mount. The behavior department feels that Bruno may be most compatible with slow introductions to tolerant, female dogs. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog while in our care. 10/20: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Bruno approaches and greets politely. He follows and sniffs, repeatedly checking in. Bruno is tolerant of play but does not engage fully.
Summary (2):: 10/21: Bruno is polite when greeting, wanders away. 10/22-23: Bruno follows, attempts to mount the female helper dog. He briefly reciprocates play when solicited.
Summary (3):: 10/24: Bruno continues to follow and attempt to mount. 11/2: Bruno is polite when greeting the female helper dog.

Summary:: Brno was whining, tense, and jumpy.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bruno so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Bruno remains calm when in his kennel in the shelter environment and social with handlers outside of his kennel. He may display some anxious behavior, but will engage with his care takers, taking treats and soliciting attention.

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Bruno appears anxious at the care center, pacing and whining. As we have no information of home in the home, we do not know if this behavior will present in a future home environment. If it does, we recommend giving Bunco things to do to help relieve his anxiety, such as Kongs, puzzle toys, and walks. Positive reinforcement, reward based training only should be used.
