05/08/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bruce Wayne….Love him… True, he was a bit unruly when he arrived at the care center and he was not fond of having his behavior assessed…I do not like tests either mostly when I am stressed and it would be even worse if I was a Chihuahua.. We all know how that breed is..The shaking leaf type…Well, he was all friendly and well disposed when I showed up at his door, got leashed 1,2, 3 and went for a much appreciated walk around the block. The light rain did not seem to bother Bruce Wayne. He was not fond of my treats but begged for some lap time that I converted into arm time…BW was the perfect gentleman proving us that things can improve with a little TLC. Bruce Wayne, the tiny Chihuahua(he is only 6 pounds) would love to be your forever and loyal best friend. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care center.
05/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/5/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/17/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 3. Dog repeatedly spins toward the touch, and repeatedly tries to exit. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog snaps Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Bruce Wayne appeared fearful during his assessment, backing away from the assessor. When his aw was touched during the assessment, he snapped. PLAYGROUP: Bruce Wayne offers defensive correction upon approach from other dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/5/17 During his initial medical exam, Bruce Wayne was growling and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Bruce Wayne so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Bruce Wayne is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Bruce Wayne has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has snapped when uncomfortable. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Bruce Wayne snapped when his paw was handled, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Bruce Wayne’s paws at this time and being cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Bruce Wayne to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Though observed to be human-social, Bruce Wayne may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Bruce Wayne to interact at his pace.
