05/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A bowl of chocolate chip ice cream in Bulldog form, Chuy (pronounced “Chewy” I’ve learned) is the cure for all that ails you on a scorching summer’s day. Or a winter’s day. Or over the autumnal equinox. Really any time. Of course I’d like to start off by describing Chuy’s less superficial strengths. How well he sits for his treats, his fantastic dance moves during a good, old-fashioned butt scratch, his funny way of snorting while he sniffs about your neck. But honestly, I’m so captivated by this hunk’s looks — the polka dot nose, the delicious, brindled coat, those big puppy-like paws that you want in just one place and one place only (hint: it’s across your lap) — I’m hard pressed to think about much else. But, no. I’m being shallow. Chuy is much more than just great looks and polished manners. He is a gentleman among men, refined and sweet, affectionate and curious, playful and bright. Chuy is also part American Bulldog and how fitting that is, as to me, he is classic Americana all the way. He is Coca-Cola drunk from a glass bottle, fireworks, apple pie, a pick-up truck, maybe even a country song. Donning his very best star-spangled scarf, I wonder what could be more perfect than having this all-American boy right by your side on our nation’s favorite holiday? Or really any day. O say can you see…Chuy forever home with you? Chuy is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
05/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bruce came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Bruce was relaxed with loose body posture, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Bruce came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and affectionate towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Bruce was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Bruce was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Bruce appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-dog: Bruce was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Bruce greets, exchanging sniffs with the greeter dog, and then begins to wander the pen, becoming a bit bouncy at times.
