02/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Bruce is a dignified and distinguished gentleman who is very confused at the turn of events that has him away from his home and all that the knows. He sits in his kennel calmly and quietly, watching the goings on in the busy shelter with his deep and soulful eyes. I love older dogs and Bruce’s slightly greying muzzle endeared him to me immediately. At first a little aloof in the yard, Bruce was quickly won over with some treats and gentle words but really came alive when a friendly young male dog joins us in the adjacent pen. The youngster made Bruce forget his worries for a moment as they sniffed and wagged through the fence. On leash and in the park, Bruce marks a bit and wants to sniff all the other doggy smells we encounter. He is a bit of a meanderer- going from good smell to good smell but can be brought back to attention with the offer of a yummy treat. Older dogs bring with them a sense of wisdom and calm and Bruce is no exception. I can see him being an easy companion, happy for couch time and a good sniffing walk around the block with his new family that may even include a canine companion. He is settling in to the routine of the care center but he waits for the love and care of his new family and my hope for Bruce is that he does not have to wait too long.
02/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bruce walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Bruce was distracted his body was soft, tail wagging, but was focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He took the toy away but had soft body language. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Bruce was somewhat fearful the first part of the assessment but he became more loose and friendly trough the assessment. We recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Bruce be given the opportunity to interact at their own pace. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Bruce is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs Bruce greets politely, both males and females, maintaining a loose body and wagging tail. He enters the yard and sniffs the helper dog (female) then mounts when she flags for him.
02/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Bruce is polite when greeting and is interested in interacting with both males and females. He does attempt to mount (he is currently unaltered), but he is not persistent and will engage in very soft play if solicited. He entered the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing him into a home with other dogs to ensure the resident dog is tolerant of his social behaviors. When off leash with other dogs Bruce greets politely, both males and females, maintaining a loose body and wagging tail. He enters the yard and sniffs the helper dog (female) then mounts when she flags for him. 2/9 update: Bruce greets well but does attempt to mount the other male dog. He quickly gives up and engages in a few bouts of soft play before retiring and sniffing around the pen.
