Hello, my name is Bruce. My animal id is #15804. I am a male tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 09-Dec-2017.
Bruce is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs. Bruce is suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience.

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Date of intake:: 12/9/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Owner surrender
Date of assessment:: 12/12/2017
Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.
Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Paw squeeze 2:: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Toy:: 1. No interest.
Summary:: During the handling assessment Bruce maintained a neutral posture, though still a bit wary he did follow assessor during the tag item, and showed no concerning behavior.
Summary (1):: Bruce is uncomfortable around other dogs, displaying a tense posture during his interactions. Bruce was brought in with 5 other large mixed breed dogs reported to have lived together, however no information about their behavior was provided. The Behavior Department recommends that Bruce be the only dog at this time. 12/10: When off leash at the Care Center, Bruce very briefly greets the novel female dog with a nervous, tucked posture but mostly avoids further contact, and explores the yard. As the session continues he becomes stiffer each time the other dog approaches him. 12/13: Today greets a fearful dog with a tense posture. He immediately moves away when handlers interrupt him, and stays close to them.
Date of intake:: 12/9/2017
Summary:: Unknown
Date of initial:: 12/10/2017
Summary:: Allows all handling, tense
ENERGY LEVEL:: Bruce displays a low energy level in the care center though this may be due to his fear. We cannot be certain of his behavior in a new home environment though recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as a way to direct his energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: Due to Bruce’s response to some handling items,we feel he may be intimidated by small children. He needs a slow approach and the ability to warm up to new people and new environments at his own pace. _X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Bruce has shown during playgroup, we feel that Bruce should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Bruce associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.
Potential challenges: : Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Though observed to be human-social, Bruce may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Bruce to interact at his own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing his to new/unfamiliar situations.
