Bruce
Hello, my name is Bruce. My animal id is #10516. I am a male brown dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 22-Oct-2017.
Bruce is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). He has allowed minimal handling the care center, quickly escalating to warning behaviors (growling, lunging) that have made him unsafe to remove from his kennel.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Date of intake:: 10/22/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 10/25/2017
Summary:: Bruce is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. He appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. He has also allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Bruce is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home.
Summary (1):: Bruce was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 10/24: When off leash at the Care Centers, Bruce displays a tucked tail, and low head. He quickly tucks his rear when the greeter sniffs him. Further into his session, he checks in with the other dog and is tolerant of her paw slaps and solicitations. He offered her on play bow before bouncing away. 10/25: Bruce displayed a tense posture when greeting a novel male dog. He ignores interruptions and begins to stiffen his body, with raised hackles as the session continues. He does not soften up when a novel female dog greets him, and is separated.
Date of intake:: 10/22/2017
Date of initial:: 10/23/2017
Summary:: Growling and unpredictable.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Bruce has been challenging to handle while at the Care Center. When being moved out of kennels and through the building he has been reported to lunge at staff members.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New Hope: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address the underlying anxiety.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Reactivity towards other humans was noted by staff member (lunging, growling). Because this appears to present a challenge inside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
